Listening to the new Quartet score release made me want to watch the film again, which I haven't seen for many years. I don't normally bother with end credits, but this time I did. Mostly, it's natural sounds -- rain, faint thunder, et cetera -- but right at the very end there's a quite startling stinger. Has anyone else noticed this?

My experience of seeing the Scorsese Cape Fear for the first time was in the kind of theater you don't find any more, a fully THX-certified auditorium with a 50,000-watt sound system.

This was in north Dallas at the Northpark mall, the General Cinema I & II. Auditorium I is the one I speak of, where other late '80s–early '90s big screen extravaganzas played like the restored Spartacus in 70mm, Disney's Aladdin in 70mm, The Abyss, etc.

This was the same auditorium with the observation booth in the back where Spielberg & Co. held the final public sneak of Jaws in early 1975.

The sound of that Herrmann score in a new recording really sent the shivers up-and-down the spine like slow malenky lizards right at the main title. With the mix favoring the music in many places, it was the purest musical experience I've ever had on a film. You can imagine how Alex North's Spartacus score penetrated the viewer there, too.

This album's a real dream come true for me. Thanks Quartet Records, Amblin Entertainment and NBC/Universal!

I wasn’t quite aware of the configuration (or history) of that Dallas auditorium at North Park, but I grew up in DFW and saw countless great screenings in that room, including SCHLINDLER’S LIST for the first time. There’s a non-zero chance it’s also where I saw CAPE FEAR but my memory is indistinct. What is distinct is that Elmer’s version of Benny’s score was a literal blast to hear in the theater, and the combination of hearing it with Marty’s electrifying version of the story, especially with a live audience.

I have the OST but am looking forward to this expansion with great anticipation.

nerf, Schindler's List played in Northpark II. Quite the disappointment, but some big hit of the time was occupying Northpark I no doubt. The Vertigo restoration was also shunted to Northpark II for the same reason.

Have a look at the snack bar/litter pre-show trailer (taken from the genuine film!) that showed in the glory days of Northpark I:

Cape Fear had the good fortune to play in the premier Northpark I.

The film is really good. It has a nervous edge to it.

This was also included on the LaserDisc. The squall sounds tail off, then you hear a faint rush of human screaming, then into that merges a wicked synthesizer crescendo which ends with a gnarly coiling sound as a "When in Hollywood, Visit Universal Studios" card appears with a crowd in a rollercoaster and a tableau I can't quite remember from the Universal Studios tour.

All this was enjoyable enough for repeated plays at the tail end of LaserDisc side three.

So watching Ratched on Netflix. They use both the original and Bernsteins re-recorded Cape Fear throughout. Pretty awesome to have the score reused this way.

Great sound, great notes. The complete package.

These deluxe remastered editions sometimes presage a new video of the originating production. The current Cape Fear Blu-ray is a great one to upscale on a 4K player, with great sound to match.

4K/UHD however, would be most welcome, as that very fine Blu-ray is now showing its age (15 years ago).

Received my copy last night and immersed myself in it today. What a treat to have the whole score at last. Brilliant clear sound. Enjoyed the liner notes and images. Thanks to all who had a hand in bringing Bernstein's clever adaption to us. Highest recommendation!

Of course, now I'm feeling uneasy about those shadows in the yard...
