The Academy will pull a There Will be Blood move at the last minute with Powell and sub in Reznor/Ross who will win.

big grin

The funny thing is... this is something they would do. I'm super happy about Pwell's nomination but I'm still trying to figure out how it cleared the Music Branch somewhat strict rules like...

A score shall not be eligible if:

1. it has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music, or
2. it has been diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs...

There's also this rule...

B. A score must be created specifically for the eligible feature-length motion picture and comprise a
minimum of 35% of the total music in the film.

1. If a score does not meet the minimum 35%, the composer may submit a letter to the Branch
Executive Committee, stating reasons for the score to be accepted for consideration. All letters
must be received by the due dates published by the Academy for the current Awards cycle.

2. The decision of the Music Branch Executive Committee shall be final.

I don't know the numbers for this one unfortunately. Was there more score in the film than songs and previous material?

It's coming right there. When I -- for once in a blue moon -- agree with 'general consensus' about CHALLENGERS being the best of the year, it's overlooked, of course. Shame.

I find those score nominees excruciatingly boring and/or irritating. There are some good bits and bobs in THE WILD ROBOT, but the rest.....nope!

I just don't see what people see in Bertelmann. I can like a good textural score once in a while, but he just keeps churning out anonymous drones time and time again, and people seem to LOVE it. Baffling. Same is true for THE BRUTALIST.

EMILIE PEREZ and THE WICKED are just empty pap to my ears. And they're musicals, so they have no business being in this category.

THE WILD ROBOT is mostly boring, but as a I said, has a couple of good moments.

On the plus side, there are two nominations for Norway in other categories -- one for the script for THE BRUTALIST, the other for the documentary NO OTHER LAND.

I do wonder why Wicked in particular is here.

I wonder that too. I didn’t think Wicked would be eligible since the music is primarily derived from the Broadway musical.

Long overdue

Based entirely on historical precedent I'd say WICKED has this one locked up. The Academy routinely awards Best Score to the instrumental score for musicals. Which also means this will be another Oscar-winning score available as a download only.

Not that John Powell isn't a worthy nominee. He's way past due for Academy recognition.

Emilia Perez is the worst movie to be nominated for thirteen(!) Oscars I can possibly think of. Embarrassingly awful.

Since when? I'm having trouble remembering the last time a live-action musical won Best Score. If you're thinking of the Alan Menken years with the animated Disney movies, that was over 30 years ago and could hardly be considered "routine".

I feel that the nomination for Wicked is simply to be trendy and that those who are nominating in this day & age of the film industry don't understand the difference between Original Score and an adaptation from existing material. I do miss the days of when there was a Best Adapted Score category.

I've been defending Music Branch for ages but lately, I can't really anymore. There are a lot of better scores this year and it's so boring that 4 of the nominees are presented on every single body award.

Also, what's going on with musical underscore? Wicked and Emilia Perez? That's odd, specially when you disqualify Dune 2.

Don't get it. I frankly don't care. Also, can't understand why labels aren't doing cd releases of these scores, as they are commercial award worthy.

Nonsense nowadays!

It could happen BUT that didn't work for MARY POPPINS RETURNS.

That's exactly the reason that I believe WICKED will win and that's the same reason musicals like this have always won in the Best Score category going back to THE WIZARD OF OZ. Remember the winner of Best Score will be chosen by the entire Academy membership and not just the music branch. WICKED will be the only film on the list where the average actor or set designer can remember the music standing out.

It could happen BUT that didn't work for MARY POPPINS RETURNS.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS wasn't nearly the success that WICKED has been.

I think CONCLAVE should win it. but probably won't .
as long as CHALLENGERS is not nominated I am happy.

I do miss the days of when there was a Best Adapted Score category.

The category was discontinued after 1985. Then Menken et al starting racking up Oscars for those animated musicals. So the category was brought back for 4 years (1996-99), until the Academy felt that there weren't enough quality films to fill it. It was discontinued again and has been gone for the last 25 years.
