I have no Bond scores in my modest collection. Is Moonraker a good place to start?

It depends on what you expect and are looking for. MOONRAKER is perhaps the most gorgeous Bond score, it's lush, with many beautiful passages in typical late John Barry fashion. On the other hand, it is not the most typical Bond score, so if you start with MOONRAKER, you may not get the best introduction to the classic Barry Bond sound.
However, if you generally like (late, romantic) John Barry scores, then you definitely should get MOONRAKER, regardless of how you feel about Bond.

Totally agree with this. Especially if you grew up in the 70's/80's and that was the foundation for your love of soundtracks.

Yeah. I actually think MOONRAKER is one of the most beautiful themes Barry has written for a Bond movie (not to mention that there are many other excellent cues in the film score). As song, it may not be as iconic as "Goldfinger" or immediately catchy as "The Living Daylights", but as a pure musical theme it is one of the best melodies ever written for a Bond movie.

This is just my personal ranking of the Bond scores. Your mileage may vary.

Cheers

My favorite is Goldfinger, and that's favorite album, not best score. The Goldfinger score is subdued in the film mix compared to the no-holds-barred album experience. One of the Goldfinger score's finest moments, the original end title, isn't even used in the film.

I largely agree with those rankings. I'd say all the Bond scores headlined by Shirley Bassey are the best, which makes my soon-to-arrive Moonraker album very welcome.

I assume that is better than "Awaiting fulfillment".

JB interview where the maestro briefly talks about his dissatisfaction with how his Moonraker score was used in the movie. Why was it mixed in mono for the movie? Perhaps they could remix it when they do the 4k transfers for blu-ray.

Why was it mixed in mono for the movie?

It wasn't. There was a 3-track LCR mix and it was used in the film. You can confirm this with the Blu-ray and I've seen vintage 35mm prints that were clearly stereo. I don't know what Barry experienced.

maybe he saw a mono print of the movie or the sound was in mono faulty in the cinema

https://forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/2145353/when-moonraker-was-in-cinemas-did-explosions-effects-etc-used-to-shake-the-cinema/p2

one answers says this:

Moonraker was never shown in the UK in 70mm, even at the Odeon Leicester Square. This was because of a thing called quota. British cinemas had to show at least 30% British films and as Moonraker was a British film it was useful in contributing to quota obligations. In fact no Bond film was shown in 70mm in the UK. Back in 1979 when Moonraker was released hardly any local cinemas had Dolby Stereo sound, so in the vast majority of cases it was shown in mono.
Even some West End cinemas did not have Dolby Stereo, I once saw a double bill of The Wild Geese and The Sea Wolves at the Odeon St. Martin's Lane. The Wild Geese was in excellent 4 track mag stereo while The Sea Wolves, a Dolby Stereo film, was in mono as St. Martins Lane did not have a Dolby Stereo decoder. If you are wondering what 4 track mag is, before the advent of Dolby Stereo optical sound tracks, the only way to get stereo sound in the cinema was to add 4 magnetic strip sound tracks to the print (in the case of 35mm, it was 6 tracks for 70mm). These supplied sound to three speakers (five for 70mm) behind the screen and to the auditorium surround speakers.

and later on:

I should have pointed out in the above that quota only applied to 35mm films! Therefore cinemas were very happy to play British films in 35mm to meet their quota. 70mm did not count for quota which is why South Pacific could play the Dominion Tottenham Court Road for four and a half years.
