"...[sporting] a by-the-numbers Shirley Walker score..."

'By the numbers'. That's a strange euphemism for 'better than the movie deserved'.

Something like Black Christmas would deserve that brush-off.

According to the "'80s All Over" podcast, Can't Stop the Music was the very first movie released to theatres in the US in the 1980's. It was a harbinger of doom.

I just watched an old episode of Sneak Previews where Siskel and Ebert called it one of the worst movies of the year.

I think the Hyams Narrow Margin is a bit under appreciated. Certainly it is not innovative or creative, but it works pretty well within the parameters of what it is. It is a good looking film, and of course Hackman works well here. The kind of adult travel drama that we really do not see anymore.

Otherwise, that is a list of a lot of bad movies.

These later shows are, by and large, not nearly as cohesively entertaining as the earlier run of Columbo, yet there are some gems sprinkled into the mix and, even at their low point, Falk’s performance always keeps you invested. Universal remastered the episodes in 4K and they are presented here in 16:9 (1.78) AVC encoded transfers that are nicely detailed and encoded. An episode guide and newly commissioned artwork again by Tony Stella concludes Kino’s “Columbo” Blu-Ray retrospective.

Strange that the controversy about this isn't mentioned: these episodes (most of them, at least) were not intended for 16:9! That should be beyond obvious considering the revival series started in 1989 and widescreen TV was certainly not a thing at the time. So yeah, this is a MAJOR mistake in my view and I will not be purchasing this set. Sounds like it wasn't even really Kino's fault as these were the new HD masters which Universal provided to them and it matches what's currently available online.

But the DVD sets produced by Universal were in the correct original ratio of 4:3! So hold onto those, I guess, if you want the full video image. It's really pretty bad -- here are some side by side comparison examples from a reddit thread:

Home Theater Forum and Forum at Blu-ray.com have some discussion about this issue:

I was really excited to have the complete series in HD so this is a major bummer. Maybe even as much of a bummer as Kino having commentary tracks produced for every episode and then not being able to include them.

The trailer claimed it was launching the '80s, but it more like closed the door on the '70s.
