Anyone saw the opening ceremony last night? I liked it, although some of the 'diversity' things were going on for too long. Had a Eurovision vibe at times. But many other good things. Loved many of the music tracks/setpieces. The Eiffel tower/laser sequence was very Jean Michel Jarre-inspired, so surprising to hear he was not involved. The Celine Dion performance was moving, call me an ol' softie if you wish.

As for the games itself, I sadly do not have access to the channel that shows most of it, so I'm stuck with the track-and-field segment that is shown on our public broadcaster (that's where we have our greatest medal chances anyway). But will hopefully see some highlights here and there.

Spectacular opening ceremony, very and proudly "French" while also inviting to all nations. I liked it a lot, certainly the most spectacular opening ceremony of any sports event I've ever seen. I doubt this will be topped any time soon. Then again, it was four hours long, so they had to come up with something.

Unlike Prince Damian, I LOVE the Olympics -- both winter and summer -- but am frustrated that I'm unable to see much of it.

I would love to see a sheet of the music used throughout the opening ceremony, and the name of the original compositions, both orchestral and electronic. Few of them were mentioned by the rubbish Norwegian commentators, who talked all over most of it. I only recognized some of the existing music, like Dukas' THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE (ahead of the LumiƩre section) and, I think, some Daft Punk. Maybe a few other bits and bobs. Like, who did the music for the metal horse galloping across the Seine? Couldn't hear it under the commentators.

While most of the Olympics are shown on Max/Discovery+ (which I do not own), I've managed to gain access to Eurosport, which at least shows a few things. Today, I saw Djokovich totally annihilate an Australian whose name escapes me in the tennis tournament, saw Spain comfortably beat The Dominican Republic in the football tournament, and Evenopol continue his impressive streak (after his third place in the Tour de France) with a win in the cycling time trial. Although in the absence of Vingegaard and Pogacar (who for some reason didn't participate).

I thought the finale outshone the rest of the production that meandered throughout the Seine river. The light show from the Eiffel Tower was impressive but the performance by Celine Dione was earthshattering, especially when taken into context off her illness. A true Drop the mike, almost tear inducing performance. Whoa.

Agreed, even as someone who's never been particularly attracted to Dion's singing or music. It almost rivalled that performance by the late Aretha Franklin at the Kennedy Honors a few years back, a clip I've seen on YouTube probably 20 times.

Me neither, but only because I feel so bad for the athletes who lose.

I think the most I watch,of any sport, is the bits on the news.

You're both reinforcing the film score nerd stereotype, the one who doesn't watch sports because they were bullied in PE class. wink

I got Eurovision vibes watching some of the ceremony as well. I thought it was pretty good, at least they tried something different. Celine was very good, she seemed emotional with it all so good for her. The rain was mental, I thought where I live is bad!

Not that interested in watching much of the games however. I flicked on the channel earlier and they were showing Judo and Diving and I was wondering who watches this stuff? I'll watch the golf though, hopefully Shane and Rory can get a medal for Ireland.

Judo and diving, I would watch if I had access. Golf, less so. Maybe on a Sunday, if I'm hung over. But still, we have hope for a medal there, with Victor Hovland.

I wonder if Paris 2024 will have anything like what happened with Derek Redmond in Barcelona 1992.

PE bulling aside Ive watched various sports leagues my entire life. The NFL in the 70's, 80's and 90's. NASCAR in the late 90's to the mid 2000's and currently a big NHL fan. I just don't care for the Olympics.

No it's not that. Watching all that exertion makes me tired. and when I was working the last thing I wanted was to come home, knackered, and watch people do all that big grin

No, I don't feel that strongly about it.
