In the series "Cinema:Sound", the Wiener Symphoniker are taking up their long tradition of film music and bringing a film music legend to Vienna every year to guide the orchestra through their soundscapes. On 20 May 2025, the celebrated Hollywood composer, conductor and pianist James Newton Howard will be conducting the Wiener Symphoniker for the first time.

The VIP package includes a meeting with the composer and an invitation to dress rehearsals !

I found out about the concert last night. As I had a ticket for his 2020 London concert which got cancelled due to the pandemic this will be a great opportunity to finally see him conduct his own scores. With the Horner Kickstarter not going through I ordered the VIP-package so that I can attend one of the rehearsals.

I hope that he will include his violin concerto which was scheduled for London. Also wouldn't mind pieces from Red Sparrow, Wyatt Earp and Dinosaur. wink

I Will be there. Unmissable.

Hopefully - apart from the mandatory concerto - program will include treasures such as Flatliners, Alive, Wyatt Earp, Restoration, Dinosaur, I am legend, "swimming" from Water Horse, etc...

I have attended two JNH concerts so far, the Hollywood in Vienna concert in 2015 and his concert tour in Budapest in 2017. Both were outstanding so I hope I will be able to attend this one too next year. From the movies mentioned above only Dinosaur was played in one the concerts as far as I can remember. But he has so many fantastic melodies that I'm sure we won't be disappointed.

You're correct. it's true. On his 2017 tour only.

Swimming is from WATERWORLD. I doubt there will be synths on stage?

There is a track named swimming in water horse, possibly the highlight of the score.

I've seen JNH live, but only in portions in concerts that had other selections as well. I've never seen a full-on JNH concert with the man himself on the podium. That's high on my want list. Alas, I'm on complete travel lockdown at the moment, due to no money. If my financial situation changes this fall or in the spring of 2025, and there are still tickets left, I would consider going.

Still 728 seats are available, so only ~ half of a hall is sold at this moment.
Well, it's not Williams, obviously smile

I think it will be also a full house concert but just like in the case of the Desplat concert it takes some time. Which I don't mind because my planned ticket purchase won't happen before September...

I don't know why these composers constantly insist on having so little from their pre-millennium period, often their best, but by all means -- a pretty decent programme. At least it has more pre-millennium stuff than Zimmer's latest.

Sadly, I won't be able to scrape together enough money to partake on such short notice. Hoping to attend some film music events this autumn and onwards, though.

I'd have to dig out the programme, but the list looks quite similar to the concert he gave in London about 10 years ago.

How great if JNH had an 80s medley for instance, with synths, drums and guitar.

I hope it will have a CD release later on because I can't go to the concert this time. I was in the audience of JNH's Hollywood in Vienna concert in 2015 and his concert in Budapest two years later. Both were fantastic. This setlist is amazing as well.
