I’m glad you reminded me about the liner notes. There’ll actually be two sets available for this release. Yavar produced really extensive coverage for the digital versions and obviously, due to limited space, these couldn’t be accommodated in the physical booklet. So, what we’ve got is a more truncated version of the notes with the CD and, if you want more detail and background info, a URL to follow (which is printed in the booklet) to the unedited/ full notes which accompanied the original releases. smile

I can’t wait for new folks to discover this excellent music now that it’s been collected on CD. And I echo Leigh’s thanks to all the Kickstarter backers who helped make these recordings a reality in the first place!

Very curious how other people are going to rank these eight scores.

JERRY GOLDSMITH AT THE GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATER
Music Composed by Jerry Goldsmith
Conducted by Leigh Phillips
Performed by City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra

Label: Intrada INT 7179
Film Date: 1959 - 1962
Album Date: 2024
Time: 79:08
Tracks: 48

Intrada announces the CD release of Jerry Goldsmith's music composed for The General Electric Theater, previously recorded with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and reconstructed and conducted by Leigh Phillips. Phillips spearheaded several Kickstarter campaigns to fund the recording of these scores for digital release. Now Intrada presents these recordings on compact disc.

The General Electric Theater was the longest running anthology TV series at ten seasons, largely featuring scores by Elmer Bernstein (featured on a previous Intrada release). Until Phillips had recorded the Goldsmith scores, they had never been available. While it is difficult to confirm how many scores Goldsmith composed for the series, his earliest is Hitler's Secret dating back to 1959, with the latest being The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky from 1962. This new album consists of some scores that survived in written form and others that Leigh Phillips was able to reconstruct by ear using the episode audio.

This set includes the following episodes: Hitler's Secret, The Last Dance, Sarah's Laughter, The Committeeman, The Legend That Walks Like a Man, My Dark Days, and The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky.

Also included is Autumn Love, a suite composed for the CBS music library.

The General Electric Theater aired from 1953 to 1962. Hosted by Ronald Reagan for much of its run, the show featured a wide range of dramatic and comedic stories, often showcasing well-known actors of the time. Each episode was a standalone story, covering themes from suspense to romance, and sometimes included adaptations of famous literary works. The series was notable for its high production values and contributions from prominent directors and writers, making it a significant part of television history during the 1950s and early 1960s.

I paid my $41 and look forward to receiving it in about three weeks time, once the postal service has used my $18 shipping money to send my disc on a world cruise. Now I just need His Majesty's Ransom and Customs to not kidnap it and send me a ransom demand on top. Which they mostly don't, thank goodness.

Joking aisde, I look forward to receiving the disc.

Cheers

I never did get the downloads for these, I'm very excited to discover these scores on a CD. Thanks Intrada (and Leigh of course!)

(They're on the streaming services anyway. As they should be.)

While they are all up on Apple Music, I can only find three on Spotify USA: MY DARK DAYS, THE COMMITTEEMAN and AUTUMN LOVE. The others don't come up at all.

Those three are listed under The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Leigh Phillips, and are not findable under artist Jerry Goldsmith.

(I participated in I think most of the kickstarters, but lost track somewhere....)

The last three EPs went up to Spotify the same time as they went on general release. However, the earlier EPs will make it on there by the end of the year (I have to wait for the Tunecore release schedule to cycle)

I got it for about a $1.52 less, as I cashed in the meagre loyalty points I had!

Was part of "Autumn Love" tracked into a/some Twilight Zone episode(s)? I'm making a mental connection there, but if I'm wrong, well, it won't be the first time.

Yes, Graham, and oddly, my first thought, just on remembering how the episode feels, was to look at "The Bewitchin' Pool," where it isn't used, but Goldsmith's "Autumn Mist" is.

"Autumn Love" features in:
"In His Image" (season 4, episode 1)
"No Time Like the Past" (season 4, episode 10)
"The Long Morrow" (season 5, episode 15)

Thanks Lorien! I think I remember a brief cue in "In His Image", and we might even have talked about it here. Wait a minute, what's that brilliant online site for Twilight Zone scores...? Let's see if I can find it -

That's it! Fantastic resource!

Now that the CD will be winging its way to everyone, here's a little extra treat (for those who might have 2 hrs to spare) by way of the complete "The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky" recording session footage. It is, after all, the score which started the entire project!

The session was live-streamed for high-level backers at the time but, now that 2 years has passed(!), I'm sure no one will have any objections to this portion of content being shared to the wider group, to mark the release of the physical CD.

Hope you enjoy seeing the players at work on this early Goldsmith gem smile
