Pretty great. I'm excited to see a proper colour graded version, plus this is a film that's been mistreated enough, it's high time for some tender love and care. Peckinpah is one of those tough guys beset by roiling emotion, his films contain many bitter swipes, and here it feels like he's simultaneously having a breakdown and to some degree coming to terms with himself. It moves from high tension (opening with three great action sequences) to a tragic fatalism, as the characters, accustomed to the freedom of the west, very gradually find themselves overwhelmed, with no room left to manoeuvre. Curious to see if an EU release appears. I believe Criterion's international releases have been slowing down of late and I wonder about it's appeal here compared to The Wild Bunch or Cross of Iron. Kristofferson and Bob Dylan are decidedly American folk figures. I wasn't around for the theatrical release but I found it hard to track down when I was in my Peckinpah phase back in the vhs days (I found a copy of Straw Dogs first, which was banned in the uk at the time).

Apparently, this Criterion release is going to drop the 1988 122-minute so-called "Turner Preview Version," which appeared on the two-disc DVD set along with the 2005 115-minute Special Edition restoration. Some people believe the Turner Version better represents Peckinpah's original vision than does the Special Edition. But the "Turner Version" was of poor quality on the DVD, and perhaps that's why it isn't being included by Criterion. The 106-minute theatrical version was also released on laserdisc in Japan and the UK. But the U.S. laserdisc was the 122-minute Turner version. Yup, I prefer the Turner version, but what I didn't know is that it was transferred from a print, & now that print has faded beyond use, so those extra scenes I liked are gone forever (no negative), so I'm keeping hold of my DVD set. I think the main event is the 50th Anniversary Release, which I think is what we call the Seydor cut plus more scenes.

Without a shadow of doubt, Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett and cross of iron were peckinpah's 3 greatest projects.

And I'm partial to Cable Hogue .

Cue peckinpah fans to list nearly everything he's done. I didn't say his other stuff wasn't also good, merely that they were his undeniable masterpieces, and for good reason. Come on, those three were on another universe for scale and power, be honest.

Then when you finish your kitchen sink binge, you need to rectify that.
