Aw heck, neumation... when you discreetly hinted here a few months ago, in a different John Barry thread, that fans of THE LAST VALLEY would get to hear the complete score (including pre-revision, unused, and alternate cues) "sooner rather than later," I mistakenly assumed that the full original recordings had turned up. I can't read music; but this will be the first publication of a full score that will be worth my purchase. THE LAST VALLEY is my favorite Barry score. The film (as released) is not a masterpiece, yet it's quite underrated and still sadly little-known to the world beyond hardcore film-music enthusiasts. Burlingame's essay plus the promised discussion of the extensive re-edits that both film and score have suffered should be worth $75 to me. Although decades ago I lost hope of ever getting to see the picture's original roadshow version, this Neumation volume promises to provide me with specifics I've long wanted to learn. Thanks for undertaking this project! Besides -- with score in hand, perhaps a musician friend one day might at least let me hear some of these pieces for solo piano or cello. That's also better than nothing.

George Winston recorded "A Christmas Song" from The Last Valley--sounds really nice (and I'm not really a Winston fan). He also recorded Barry's "Troubadour."

There’s more news to come.. Yes, I did read the last line in the announcement posted above. But since I assumed too much in the first place, I'm reining-in my speculation on your latest "TBA."

Engraved from the recently recovered orchestrations by Bobby Richards. Hi, Neumation. During June of 2023, you had updated the FSM thread on Kritzerland's issue of The Sailor Who Fell from Grace With the Sea verifying that its recording sessions were done in the U.K. during early 1976 & that Bobby Richards was its copyist/orchestrator. I am guessing that Neumation had access to Bobby Richards' archives earlier in 2023 and had found out about that Johnny Mandel score whilst assembling The Last Valley for this publication. Are there any other (non-Barry) scores orchestrated by Bobby Richards (such as The Stick Up) that might be publishable? [I suppose the brevity of Mandel's Sailor would curtail any motivation to circulate it in print] What exists of Mr. Richards' own scores (like Blood Suckers or School for Unclaimed Girls)?

I didn't know about the Richards/Mandel connection. This might explain Mandel's praise of Barry--and Mandel's extremely close borrowing from "The Lion in Winter" (orchestrated by Richards) in The Verdict. Did Richards orchestrate The Verdict?
