Jeff Beal has done some fine music for famous things, like HOUSE OF CARDS, ROME, CARNIVALE etc., but I think my favourite of his is this relatively unknown documentary from 2002, about the Chinese occupation of Tibet, and in collaboration with Tibetan flautist Nawang Khechog.

Gorgeous use of local Tibetan colours (voices, wind instruments, percussion), combined with these wide, airy ambiances via electronics and chamber ensembles. He does something similar for THE DOVEKEEPERS, but that album is far too long and not as strong, overall. I've weeded this one down to a solid 42 minutes. Well worth checking out!

Thank you for bringing attention to this Thor.
I've been curious about it. I bought a used copy but once I got it home it did not play. At all. I was hesitant to buy another in the event that there was a mastering or production problem resulting in all the CDs being unplayable.
And its difficult to find. I assumed this and other Tibetan music appeared here as there are two Buddhist monasteries in the province.
I'll try to track down another.

I have the film on DVD, but it's been a long time since I've watched it and can't remember the score. I should give it another viewing soon.

Thanks for the comments! I'm in constant competition with HurdyGury about having the most threads with the fewest responses.

Thanks for the mention! I just found this on Spotify, very enjoyable.

I know Beal mostly from Monk, Jesse Stone, and House of Cards - clearly more to explore!
