More affordable (also not as large and obsessively detailed), but certainly in as gray an area:

It's interesting NYCHUS uses the copyrighted names.

...or if you aren't a man-baby with a wall of Funko Pops who likes low-detail, pre-school designs then Eaglemoss offers all of the ships with accurate model detail for an affordable price.

Ive just recently learned about all these LEGO knock-off companies. I'm surprised they're able to get around LEGO's patents.
Must less release unlicensed subjects.

If I had $2,700 dollars to spend on a model I'd just get an actual replica of the Galactica.

As far as Eaglemoss, I'm not a fan. They're waaaay over priced for their size. Eaglemoss has had plenty of accuracy issues too.

Have you ever shopped Temu, AliExpress? The NECA and Transformer Masterpiece KOs are rampant and in some cases even better than the official releases from Takara....and you pay $40 instead of $120. Heck, you can even get them on Amazon.

Never heard of those two companies. They sound shady but I guess you get what you pay for. Then again the major US retailers are known to be flooded with fake reviews, do massive data collection and seem to be selling knockoffs nowadays too. Worth a try I guess.

Basically it's China selling stuff and skirting the middle man that increase the price like 400% then sell it to us. Wish.com is the same but they don't have good deals like they used to.

NECA figures for $15? Yes please lol!

Holy Moly some of the prices are insane! Assuming again these are not knockoffs. Cool, thxs! I'll start shopping around.
Looks like you have to be a register user to browse Temu.

The patent in the Lego-style interlocking plastic brick ran our some time ago. Lots of Chinese companies moved in to cater to the adult building audience, and sells them on Amazon & eBay.

One company makes a complete 1-to-1 knock off of the Lego Wall-E set, for instance. It has everything but the Lego logo on the box. It's a quality set made to high standards.

Blue Brixx in Germany is a little dIfferent. They have Chinese manufacturinf ties, and sells their own & Chinese brands. They produce hundreds of original sets in many categories (with full color packaging and printed building instruction booklets), but also knock off genre properties like James Bond, Alien, Stargate, 5th Element, Space:1999, Akira, and Blade Runner with generic names, brown-box packaging, and download-only building instructions.
They have a chain of brick&mortar stores across Germany.
And they also have 80-some officially licensed Star Trek kits (ostensibly only for sale in Germany, but they ship internationally). All their kits are high quality, and when I was missing a packet of pieces to a ST kit, they sent replacements.

Lego created the brick, but is no longer the only source for qualiry brick building (esp for genre properties that aren't Star Wars).

I just looked it up and patents provided limited protection and are not renewable. That explains a lot.

Looks like it could be a shooting miniature.

Oh I am sure they are KOs in many cases but the official versions are often no better considering the drastic price increase (I mean, they're all being made in China anyway). Temu seems to mostly appeal to the women (my wife loves it) but Ali has plenty of stuff for us.

I know, I know - not Galactica - but model related.

I have never built a model anything but have always wanted a model of The Phoenix from Battle of the Planets.

I have come across this. Does anyone have any experience with this model/model company?

Would it be Ok for a complete amateur like me?

Well obviously its a model kit and not a toy. If I recall it also has lights with wiring so its not a level one build.
I personally don't like the Academy Phoenix. I think its to squashed and stretched out plus some of the details are way off.
It was stated the company designed their idolize version of the Phoenix opposed to making a screen accurate one.

I much prefer this other Phoenix model kit that came out around the same time by Wave. Its far more in proportion to what we saw in the television series. (granted as a hand-drawn spaceship its proportions changed a bit from scene to scene and episode to episode. The only down side is the Wave model kit is much smaller than the Academy model kit.

https://toytales.ca/gatchaman-god-phoenix-model-kit-from-wave-corporation/

There's build-ups of both on YouTube.

Either will cost you around $80 US dollars.

Thanks Sol

I did see the Wave one as well but thought it looked too.....toy like? But like you said, it is more cartoon accurate.

Hmmmmm........choices, choices.

I think I might get them both - they look pretty good together.
