If you are looking for an alternative tool to iTunes to govern a digital music collection, I can recommend MusicBee (https://www.getmusicbee.com) ; it can do everything iTunes can and then some. There may be a learning curve involved, because the program offers many options iTunes just doesn't have. However, it's obviously not a store, and I don't know how good it does syncing a phone. (While I do have some music on my phone, I don't sync it with anything.) As far as purchased music dissapearing, that shouldn't happen. You mean you purchased music on iTunes that is no longer available, or that actually your own files disappeared?

Purchased music should still be linked to your account. You may just need to re-download it.

*checks* Except run on a Mac. Ah, yes, you're right. That should be noted.

This was exactly what I was looking for. I'll check MusicBee out. Thanks! As I said, the program is more complex and has more option than iTunes, and it can be configured to behave like iTunes in many ways. But it handles more formats, and even both FLAC and ALAC ( you have to separately install the codecs for full ALAC support, but that's no big deal).
