Watched DuBarry Was a Lady last week on Turner Classic Movies. It had an overabundance of musical numbers (though, really, any excuse to watch Gene Kelly dance is a good one), but boy howdy, did they make a welcome distraction from the quote-unquote ‘plot’; so, a musical number at the beginning justifies the last third being set in royalty times…what? Also, Skelton was pursuing Lucille Ball which is fine, but then you consider Va-Va-Voom! cigarette girl Virginia O’Brien, who practically throws herself at an unwilling Skelton every moment she’s on screen. Like his overconfident dope deserves that kind of luck!
