My last order from Varese got to the UK in the like five days, this package was "shipped" on the 7th, didn't even get to courier until the 19th, and has now been floating around Chicago since the 22nd (having cleared customs on the 23rd).

Has anyone unwrapped and given a thoughtful listen to this first Burwell? Or have we all retreated into WhateverLand!?! I received recently and gave it few spins. I was somewhat apprehensive because I didn't enjoy Psycho II that much and figured this would be in similar vein (my main reason to buy it was to show the labels people do care about Burwell). To my surprise I enjoyed it so much more Psycho II (or something like Storyville). For an all electronic 80's score, it still sounds fresh and not dated at all. I really love the piano theme and it's also fun to spot a couple of Burwell-isms. All in all a very good score and I'm glad I bought it. If you're a fan of Burwell, this is definitely a must buy!

"Are we a community of recording fucking shipping notices & tracking, then fading into oblivion?" --------------------- I don't have this CD, Sean, so I can't comment on the music by Carter Burwell. But I totally get what you're saying about the lack of discussion about the scores the boutique labels release, that aren't composed by John Williams, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith and the few other 'good sellers'. I've largely given up posting thoughts on any new releases* that, as you say, buzz around while the CD is being posted out and what not, but die a death once people receive their CDs. Tumbleweed Reigns! It's not like you have to be some kind of music theorist to post a few sentences on what you thought of the music on the CD. Oh, but discover some sound anomaly or historical glitch on the recording or mastering and, My JayDubya, watch the thread explode with sentences and paragraphs. * by the 'lesser selling composers', for want of a better term

I suspect if you send a specific email request to Jeff at Intrada, he will be happy to get in another copy for you. I did that several months back for Lo Chiamavano Trinita and he got it back in within a month so I didn't have to order from Italy... Yavar

Glad you enjoyed this strange & unique score). As usual, spot on mate. Generations will read pages of effing shipping notes, but not a word about the thing itself. I'm no musician, musicologist or a brain by ANY means. A few words can help those in the fence I think. Kendall used to post one sentence thoughts on things like Folk's LAWNMOWER MAN 2....and that general message could sometimes sway me to investigate. Even the heavy hitters have either endless shipping/tracking messages or complaints about some sound artifact or another, as you said. The recent Horner oldies (BLESSING, HUMANOIDS) and even WINDTALKERS, have some terrific discussions about the meat & potatoes. We should do better, like this!! SIMPLE is a good album, worth having if you like Burwell and/or eerie, lo-fi, yet oddly beautiful, horror synth scores. There is a stream of melody in this piece that holds your ear, along with the atonal business. I just wish the old Varese suite had been added as a bonus.

Another example of the score upgrade prefiguring a presentation upgrade. Coming in January:

Carter Burwell is a strange one with me, Sean. I like that he has a style and I admire a lot of his scores, but he's not a composer I buy or play as frequently as many others. Although I have many composers I like, but have to be in the right mood to listen to, I find my 'Carter Burwell Moods' are even more infrequent than many others. I never connected with this score back in the 80s and it has largely passed me by in the ensuing years. Just not enough hours in the day, I guess. I hear ya there. Like Isham for me - love his work, but both are often quite mood specfic....typically dour or melancholy. I was a blossoming score fan when Raising Arizona, Blood Simple and Psycho 3 all coincidentally landed under the Christmas tree in 2 consecutive years, so I've always had a soft spot for the guy. Seeing him begin to conduct his own work in the past few years, makes me feel like a proud papa seeing his analog-funky keyboard sparrow blossom into a symphonic Eagle. Cheers & thanks K -Sean

Is there a site that lets you listen to a sample of the Blood Simple theme (track 2)? I’d like to see how the mix compares to the original version.

Where can this CD be purchased? It’s no longer on the Varèse Sarabande website.

It’s no longer on the Varèse Sarabande website. Because someone from Varese decided to move the warehouse right in the middle of Nov/Dec & Black Friday/Cyber Monday; the most lucrative couple of weeks the entire year for any business haha! Personally I'd fire someone. Oh, and still awaiting my order from the last sale they had. And we thought we had it bad before the "hostile takeover" lol! Thank you both for the info!
