My soundtrack for "The Last Kumite" is coming soon. Digital downloads and streaming will be available as soon as May 16th, though there may be some delays on some services. And yes, there will be a release of physical cds on Perseverance Records, probably not until July.

The CD arrived in my mailbox today, and first impressions are a bit mixed but definitely positive overall (Sidenote: I haven't seen the film, so this is based solely on the album listening experience.)
The score immediately sounds "retro" and scratches that nostalgic itch for '80s martial arts movie synth/rock, but for this '80s martial arts movie synth/rock fan, it sometimes left me reaching for the calamine lotion.
The first half is mostly atmospheric, Asian-flavored synthscapes reminiscent of a slightly watered-down Kickboxer (which to my ears is a already a watered-down Bloodsport, my favorite Hertzog score and a cornerstone of its era and genre), peppered with later-era techno undercurrents, synth electric and acoustic guitars and mandolin (?), and rock beat-driven tracks that alllllllmost get the blood pumping but too often stop abruptly as soon as they start swinging, leaving mis huevos the same color as the cover art for Perseverance Records' Kickboxer CD reissue.
It gains steam in the third act when those rock beats and synth guitars finally start kicking serious butt, and once the kumite begins, it's no holds barred as Hertzog unleashes keyboards of fury that make me feel like I just took a shot of sonic adrenaline, the audio equivalent of liquid courage, but like the latter, it wears off too quickly.
Despite the slow start and its lack of originality and strong themes, I enjoyed this score. Hertzog can still bring it when the bell rings, and I'd be Jean Claude Van Dammed if I didn't give this grasshopper 3.5/5 kicks to the face*.

I finally played through the CD. Lots to enjoy about it, but that throbbing sequencer wears out its welcome after some time! The disc is at least 20 minutes too long.
Some of it reminds me of the Dogfight-music from TOP GUN.
But I hope the 76 year old composer will continue doing scores.
