I just realized King Kong is younger than John Williams. That’s a sobering moment right there.

Say you grew up in New York in the 70's and early 80's without saying you grew up in New York in the 70's and early 80's.

I've been collecting "Kong" memorabilia and friendships since 1965. Joyous memories all around.

I grew up and have always lived in Philadelphia.

Yep failed to mention that before. Near Ben Franklin Bridge, si?

Anyway, Kong was the last film I saw in the cinema prior to Covid interruption and until The Fablemans. Via that Fathom Events viewing I came to appreciate the young James Flavin's performance. And on TCM the past couple days he's shown up in In Cold Blood and Mildred Pierce doing the hard-boiled detective schtick. Irish guys like Flavin and Pat Flaherty have always stood out for their dependable gritty performances, even the tiny ones. I love the way all the actors gave it their serious all vs. the big ape, none of that garden variety wink-wink so often seen in modern horror productions.

And this is the greatest:

The new material has, indeed, now been added to the existing text. Hoping you'll find the addition worthwhile.

I'm sure it was the seventies when The Sunday Times magazine did a long series about movies, that cumulated in a big film exhibition at the Roundhouse, Camden Lock, London. The star exhibit was the King Kong metal skeleton (armature), so I had to go & see it...but later it was discovered that it wasn't King Kong! I think it turned out to be the armature for Mighty Young Joe.

Yes I believe this was verified by Ray Harryhausen himself when he visited it and recognised the model. I think it was owned at the time by film historian and ITV film and programme buyer Leslie Halliwell He was given it by a Desilu executive when he spied it on a shelf at the studio when in LA on a buying trip. I remember him showing it of on Granada Television's Clapperboard series in the early 70's .After his death in 1989 it was held by BFI it is now owned by the Harryhausen Foundation

The original "King Kong" means everything to me. At the tender age of seventy seven years, Merian C. Cooper's fantasy film masterpiece remains life defining, and my favorite of all time. It was, and is, one of the most important motion pictures in the history of film. Culturally and technologically, it is a cinematic milestone. As evidence of its deservedly legendary cult status, the new three part documentary about the film's evolution, influence and legacy ... "The Legend of King Kong," by British documentarian Tom Grove, is up for a coveted "Rondo Award" in this year's voting for "Best Documentary of the Year." I sat down for a thirty minute on camera interview with Mr. Grove for the film, and it was a distinct honor to participate in this new film commemorating a fantasy film masterpiece.

And just think R.K.O. Radio Pictures executives were skeptical about the feature film's potential, and didn't want an original score, but producer Merian C. Cooper proved them wrong and wanted Max Steiner, who composed one of the greatest film scores in history, and the film saved R,K,Ol Radio Pictures from bankruptcy.

Cooper wrote me that he paid Steiner out of his own pocket to write the music, as RKO refused to fund the score.
