NEW YORK (AP) — Middle seats at many U.S. movie theaters just got more expensive.

AMC Theaters, the nation's largest movie theater chain, on Monday unveiled a new pricing scheme in which seat location determines how much your movie ticket costs. Seats in the middle of the auditorium will cost a dollar or two more, while seats in the front row will be slightly cheaper.

AMC said the pricing plan, dubbed “Sightline,” has already been rolled out in some locations and, by the end of the year, will be in place at all domestic AMC theaters during showings after 4 p.m.

Way to bring people back into the theater. I hardly had a reason to go anyway, but this kinda seals the deal.

So you pay extra for a good seat and then the person in front of you spends the whole movie on their cell phone. If they want people to pay extra they should create a section that bans phones and has seats enclosed in sound proof booths so you only hear the movie you are watching and not the one in the theater next door or the conversations of people around you.

Well if the cinemas in the US are like the cinemas in the UK...there's no staff, so no one to tell people to stop using their cell phones. Cinema going is just about a thing of the past for me, maybe a big film showing at an Imax could tempt me out.

What a terrible idea! On top of all the bad cinema habits that a lot of folks have these days (and that some of you have touched on already), it's counter-productive to the future of cinema, especially now in the wake of AVATAR 2 where there was room for some optimism.

Er.... yeah? This is nothing new: it's been standard in a lot of UK cinemas for a while now. My local Vue offers the same quality seats at different prices the further back you go (plus a couple of rows of allegedly superior "VIP" seats).

If you are a member of that Stubs thing there is not any extra fee.
It seems like a way of incentivizing people to join the club to me.

One of the Multiplex chains where I am offers VIP seats in a "sectioned off" area in the auditorium which are usually in the middle surrounded by the normal seating, which seems a bit odd to me. One thing they do which is a good idea though is a monthly pass which costs GBP10 and you can go see every film once. I think that's a good deal, as it costs that price to see one film anyway!

So kinda like at home?

I think Doc makes the best point. Premium seats at a premium price doesn't guarantee a premium experience. You're still at the mercy of who sits around you.

Last film I saw in the theater was HTTYD3 in 2019. Granted the pandemic hit the following year. But all in all Hollywood isn't making movies I like to see anymore.

I sit on the aisle always and near the back, so no big deal for me, but I haven't been in a Movie Theater since ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD and don't really see myself returning in the near or distant future.

Eh for me and my wife, it's a night out. We know going in the ticket's gonna be a certain amount, dinner or food there will be a certain amount and so on. The days of the $1.25 movie with $2 popcorn are well in the dim past. So if it costs me an extra $4 for better seating for us, so be it. If I didn't wanna spend the money at the cinema, we'd just spend it somewhere else. In end, if we have a nice time, it's well worth it.

Indeed. Doesn't seem out of the ordinary. In the UK pricing has always varied depending on seat location. Cheapest seats which I sat in when young were the first few rows closest to the screen. I remember those seats in London's West End being 50p in the 1970s.

Both AMC and Regal have those plans in the U.S., but they typically cost around $25/month, although there are no limits on how many times or how many films you can watch.

I have had it, basically it pays for itself if you go to a couple movies a month, especially if you have a family member with you

I thought the plan was for one individual only. How does having a family member help?
