Just watched this on youtube for the first time ever seeing.

Initial random thoughts:

Brando as a blond Nazi Soldier with his Brando charisma and power over all females. Okay. I was never a big Brando fan.

Montgomery Clift, quirky and strange as usual of the limited work I have seen of his. Ultimately his strangeness worked for me and yet he had a few creepy moments. Kudos to Hope Lange for doing her best to make their relationship seem somewhat believable.

Liliane Montevecchi as the french girl Francois stood out in her role not falling for the Brando charisma (at first) and was gorgeous.

Young Hope Lange as Clift's love interest was cute and endearing.

Dean Martin looked like he was waiting for Jerry Lewis to pop out from the latrine in bootcamp and do some gags with him.

Hugo Friedhofer's score was pretty good and sounded like he perhaps inspired Goldsmith and George Duning's sound and feeling in some of their scores. Goldsmith's Romantic theme writing from A GATHERING OF EAGLES comes to mind.

Young Maximillian Schell as Brando's strict Nazi Commanding Officer was good in his heavily stereotypical role as the evil Nazi.

Young Lee Van Cleef in an early non western yet heavy role in the bootcamp scenes.

May Britt as the german wife of Schell seducing Brando. She was married to Sammy Davis Jr.

Would have been interesting to see Jerry Lewis in the Montgomery Clift role which he truly could have had the dramatic chops for if he wasn't so known for his over the top comedies. He was excellent in a Ben Casey TV Episode playing a tortured doctor in the mid 60's.

John Banner who played Sergeant Schultz on TV's HOGAN'S HEROES has a cameo playing an Anti-Semite Mayor of the the town where the americans find a Concentration Camp.

Hope Lange's hometown looked like where they filmed parts of Mayberry for THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. The church looked somewhat familiar.

Cinematography was quite good throughout.

It was somewhat entertaining and yet perhaps a little too long.

Please share your thoughts.

You can see the whole movie here:

Hi, zooba.

Did you ever own the 1958 Decca LP ... or do you own Intrada's 2-CD edition?

Portions of The Young Lions were tracked into the 1st season of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA especially for the "Doomsday" episode.

Interesting info Zar. I thought back in the day I had purchased the LP or at least always saw the colorful looking album at Tower Records. But I never saw the movie till now.

Just got a great deal on the 2 CD set of THE YOUNG LIONS with THIS EARTH IS MINE on ebay for under $15..00 with shipping included. Don't have the INTRADA full score.

I wonder if Brando improvised biting and eating the snowball he takes off of Barbara Rush's breast as they lay in the snow in the opening Bavaria Skiing scene? He seems to be enjoying the munching as he emits his "Brando" charisma in seducing her to join him at the Chalet Party.

The following year, Friedhofer provided the music for The Blue Angel which was also directed by Edward Dmytryk and starred May Britt with John Banner in the cast, too.

Friedhofer previously scored Dmytryk's Soldier of Fortune.

As well as "In Love and War" and "Between Heaven and Hell."

Also look carefully for Parley Baer (the voice of Chester Goode on the radio version of “Gunsmoke” and the second mayor on “The Andy Griffith Show”) as a fellow Nazi officer of Christian’s and Herbert Rudley (Eve Arden’s husband on “The Mothers In Law”) as Clift and Martin’s commanding officer. Friedhofer’s score is one Of my Top 5 favorite scores by him.

Oh rats I can't find an old old thread where I got into the flick pretty good after seeing it for the first time and remember expounding upon Clift's ad-libbed "millions" shriek near the end with Martin. May have been on MM.com when this place was going through refurbishing. Hate it when this happens grrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

The Young Lions was used in a number of Voyage Episodes. They leaned hard on Friedhofer's scores for library cues.

They did the same with Leigh Harline's score for "The Enemy Below".

Yep! Irwin used a lot of classic films from the Fox Library, thankfully many of them got a release in the last 20 years. Getting all of those cues together makes for a nice second volume of Voyage music.

"Christian And Francoise" is one of my all-time favorite film music tracks.

Barbara Rush attended the TCM Classic Film Festival a couple years ago and was interviewed during the screenings of a few of her films, notably WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE. She was a delight. At a later event I met her and mentioned how much I admired her performance in THE YOUNG LIONS. I pointed out that she was the only character who knew all three of the male leads. She had forgotten that detail but related that she had a wonderful experience working on the film.

Cool observation erik, that Rush's character did come in contact with the 3 male leads. Brando was her ski instructor in Bavaria, Martin was her boyfriend back in the USA and she met Clift through Martin at a party at his place. I guess Hope Lange would come in second place by knowing Martin first as a guest at his party where she met Clift. She did not come in contact with Brando.

It is a pity very little of season 1 Voyage music has survived sad as Friedhofer wrote some excellent scores for season 1. The only golden age guy who wrote new music as well as being tracked.
