OK, a couple of weeks have passed since I posted the link to the podcast. For those too lazy to click the link, I post here my favourite 10 scores of 2022 (I use Norwegian premiere dates in my work; hence why there are some 2021 titles on these lists): 1. BENEDETTA (Anne Dudley) 2. Everything Will Change (Gary Marlowe) 3. The Fabelmans (John Williams) 4. Brian and Charles (Daniel Pemberton) 5. Babysitter (Forever Pavot) 6. Three Thousand Years of Longing (Tom Holkenborg) 7. Close (Valentin Hadjadj) 8. The Princess (Martin Phipps) 9. Occhiali Neri (Arnaud Rebotini) 10. Summering (Drum & Lace) Again, you need to click the link in the first post to find out what I think of them, or hear the clips. Or use Spotify/YouTube/whatever. There are some under-the-radar honourable mentions, but I will get to those in subsequent posts, as previously alluded to. Not covered in the podcast, but some other categories: Best TV scores: 1. EUPHORIA [S2], Labrinth 2. LOV3 [S1], Fabio Góes 3. WILDS, THE [S2], Cliff Martinez 4. I HATE SUZIE [S2], Johnny Lloyd 5. FLEISHMAN IS IN TROUBLE [S1], Caroline Shaw Best videogame scores: 1. TUNIC, Janice "Lifeformed" Kwan and Terence Lee 2. GENSHIN IMPACT: FOREST OF JNANA AND VIDYA, Yu-Peng Chen 3. RETURN TO MONKEY ISLAND, Michael Land, Clint Bajakian & Peter McConnell 4. CITIZEN SLEEPER, Amos Roddy 5. SKELETON CREW, Richard Wilkinson Best archival release: 1. SCARFACE, Giorgio Moroder (La-La Land) 2. VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 2 & SELECTED FILM THEMES, John Williams (Deutsche Grammophon) Compilation 3. A GATHERING OF FRIENDS, John Williams (Sony) Compilation 4. THE WEATHER MAN, Hans Zimmer (La-La Land) 5. BLACK PATCH/THE MAN, Jerry Goldsmith (Intrada) Re-Recording So....on to the FILMS! You'll find my top 20 list here (along with an enquete that you need to run through Google Translate if interested): https://montages.no/2023/02/thor-joachim-hagas-topp-20-2022/ But I'll copy/paste it for the lazy among us: 1. Benedetta (Verhoeven) 2. Avatar: The Way of Water (Cameron) 3. Zero Fucks Given (Lecoustre & Marre) 4. Ennio: The Maestro (Tornatore) 5. Ambulance (Bay) 6. The Black Phone (Derrickson) 7. Settlers (Rockefeller) 8. Moonfall (Emmerich) 9. Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood (Linklater) 10. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (del Toro) 11. The Sea Beast (Williams) 12. Top Gun: Maverick (Kosinski) 13. Spencer (Larraín) 14. Mother/Android (Tomlin) 15. The House (Roels m.fl.) 16. Red Rocket (Baker) 17. Deep Water (Lyne) 18. Prey (Trachtenberg) 19. Elvis (Luhrmann) 20. The Batman (Reeves) Honourable mentions: Dual, Into the Deep: The Submarine Murder Case, I Came By, Lamb, The Beast, Beast, Occhiali Neri, Speak No Evil. Worst movies: Interceptor, The Northman, Against the Ice, Cop Secret, The Box, Jurassic World: Dominion, Men, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Old People, The Invitation, The Weekend Away. Finally, some statistics: I listened to/sampled between 1500-2000 new 2022 scores. I saw 200 films last year, but only a measly 82 were from the actual year 2022. That's a record low.

No THIEF OF HEARTS? It has 2022 on the cover.

Best archival release: 1. SCARFACE, Giorgio Moroder (La-La Land) 2. VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 2 & SELECTED FILM THEMES, John Williams (Deutsche Grammophon) Compilation Not quite sure about the criteria, but how does Williams' Violin Concerto No. 2 as "archival"? That was a premiere release.

No THIEF OF HEARTS? It has 2022 on the cover. I took it to be a 2023 release. Not quite sure about the criteria, but how does Williams' Violin Concerto No. 2 as "archival"? That was a premiere release. Yeah, it's based on the new criteria at the IFMCA, where all compilations, rerecordings and archival releases are put into one category. OK, but the "big mama" on the CD is the 2nd Violin Concerto. It's basically a premiere recording of a new score, with a few recordings of older themes throwing in as filler (however well done they were). But perhaps the Violin Concerto does not count because it's not film related? Not quite sure about the exact criteria used.
