The Legacy of John Williams presents an exclusive interview with Laurent Bouzereau, the director of Music By John Williams, the documentary film dedicated to the life and career of John Williams, now available for streaming on Disney+.

Laurent sits down for an in-depth talk about the honour and the responsibility of creating the first documentary film on John Williams, his lifelong love for the Maestro's music, the challenges he faced throughout the production and why he made the film thinking about future generations. Joining the conversation is archival soundtrack producer Mike Matessino, who worked as Music Consultant on the documentary.

I’m looking forward to hearing that, Maurizio. I always enjoy your talks.
Great to hear that Mike Matessino was involved with the documentary. In fact, it was a real shame that he wasn’t one of the people being interviewed. It would have been nice to hear someone with his knowledge of Williams’ music talk about JW from his perspective as a film score buff as well as a film score preservationist. Also, Mike is a man of such eloquence and insight, it would have been icing on the cake. Maybe on the Blu-ray’s extras section. If a Blu-ray is even released.
I loved the film, though.

I finally had two uninterrupted hours to watch this, and enjoyed every minute of it. And even a nerd like me learned some stuff I didn't know.

For those who craved dissent in it… was that really the point? Adding in some bad reviews? Some composers who disdain him? To what end? (The film does devote a couple of minutes to the disrespect he received from musicians in Boston, though granted it doesn't get a lot of time, nor could it when so much is condensed into two hours.)

As for the inclusion of Chris Martin, that seemed to me very apt, commentary from a very successful admirer from a very different area of music. That he never worked with Williams seems beyond the point.

The truth is, it's a tribute to a man who does his job well and has lived a long, mostly happy life. It's never going to be as compelling a film as Bernard Herrmann: Music For The Movies because at the center of it is not an irascible character who was in many ways responsible for his own self-destruction. Williams is passionate, was blessed with some good fortune in his collaborations, and enjoys what he does.

But as a portrait of a man I admire, I had a great time.

Yes, some choices were strange. Still nice to have such a documentary about one of the giants of film music. I wish there would be something along this line about Goldsmith, I loved the Fred Karlin film, feels like a long time ago.
