It amazes me - that I've read absolutely no one taking 'Woman King' to task for it's glaring, almost criminal historical inaccuracy. Initially I was thrilled to see an African culture portrayed to elegantly - and came out of the theatre suitably impressed with the picture - then I did my homework. Dahomey was the most ruthless accomplice in the European slave trade. Regularly attacking and rounding up it's black neighbours to sell them to the slave traders. It carried on with this slave trade even when the British attempted to discourage them. How such an intelligent group of African-American and black artists could involve themselves in a project with such disregard for the facts baffles me. However, it's no different from the countless other examples of Hollywood canonizing villains, demonizing victims and conveniently avoiding fact in the pursuit of exploitative film-making..
