Christopher Young is going to compose a new score for the famous silent movie of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's 'Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens' (1922)!
Excellent news - he's an fine composer with plenty of experience in the genre. None of the scores for NOSFERATU thus far have connected with me. I think it's a hard film to get right.
As a fan of silent movies to see Nosferatu with the score performed live is right up my alley. The fact that this is a new score by Christopher Young makes this too good to miss. With Frank Strobel (whom I have seen doing Fritz Lang's Die Nibelungen and Metropolis) conducting the score should be in good hands.
It also means I will finally be visiting Switzerland which I wanted to do for decades. Even though Germany shares a border with Switzerland I never managed to go there. Now I only have to make it to Denmark which will be the last neighboring country I haven't traveled to. I was able to get a very cheap first class train ticket on top of that so I am really looking forward to it. Hope some of you will also be able to go.

Most of what I heard also did not connected with me but I love the James Bernard 1997 score. Never saw it in the film, but on CD I really like how he does the same he did on his Dracula scores (the Main Theme with the notes sounding like the title "Nos-Fe-Ra-Tu") but then applies a lighter tone, still very atmosferic with some excellent themes.
Very interesting. I hope this gets some kind of release.
I'll be interested to see how this stacks up against the Kino release featuring a reconstruction of the original 1922 score by Hans Erdmann. So far, I find that score the best, although I also have the CD of Bernard's score (which seems to have been for a shorter cut of the film).
The application of modern horror "chops" to a 100 year old horror classic should be fascinating.
Many thought Young's Sematary wasn't that good, when in fact it was one of the best scores of 2019, Young Alway's got the horror chops with orchestra or electronics or both - by my reckoning this could be another poll winner of the year.

I think most people just thought the movie was terrible (the fact is that it was). Young always rises to the occasion. It's a good score in a bad movie. Assez fréquent.

I can't find that thread, I remember people making rude remarks VS Goldenthal's - there was a bunch on here that thought it sounded ugly, some blamed the director meddling, not many praised it.
Exciting news! Hopefully Intrada turns it into a cd release, like they did with Craig Safan’s “Phantom”.
The best "Phantom of the Opera" score is Roy Budd's. I saw the film with the Budd score on Youtube a while back. Outstanding. Altogether in a different league to the Safan effort.
I have some high hopes for this. Theoretically there should be no temp track or a director and producers telling him what to do -- he should only have to make music that fits the picture.
I’m sure this will fast become my definitive way to listen to Nosferatu in the future. Very exciting! I wonder if along with this new score, a 4K release of the film is in the works too…
