One person is guessing Disney lost $5-10 billion in profit since the new sequels tie in with merchandising and theme park rides. I've heard the SW theme rides may have lost money at Disney World etc.

There any truth to this or fluff?

Probably a bunch of nothing. Had they left $5 billion on the table, the uppers wouldn't have a job.

Considering Star Wars merchandise is still sold in every store and online retailer imaginable, and people attend the theme parks in droves day by day, I think the folks at the Walt Disney company are doing fairly fine even if none of us thought the sequel trilogy was any good. It still has a fan base. Kids still like Star Wars a lot, and those movies ignited many new fans. It is a constant and has been since 1977. Arguing day in and day out about if a mega corporation is gonna be OK after they initiated their own investment is the most insufferable discourse on the internet these days, in my opinion.

Well maybe you think its all hooey but its not. First off we live in a very corrupt system full of schemes, manipulation and lies. We live in a system where companies purchase power is based off of perceived wealth and borrowing off money they don't really have. (Take Musk buying Twitter with the perceived not real value of Tesla) Not to mention Elon Musk and Disney continually over pay for the companies they buy out. We live in a system where people constantly fail up. Its been stated by retailers and manufacturers that Nu Star Wars doesn't sell well. With the exception of say Mando and Baby Yoda. Its my understanding kids are into Marvel superheros, Cars, Transformers, not Star Wars toys. I really don't see or hear the buzz for Star Wars village, whatever its called at the Magic Kingdom. Their Star Wars themed hotel is a gigantic bomb. A lot of previous big ticket money maker IP's have bombed at the box office. Disney + has a lot of subscribers because phone companies made deals to give their customers "free" Disney + with their accounts thus falsely inflating Disney + real subscriber base. The streaming channels like Disney + don't release their numbers to the public.

So are you worried for the Walt Disney company, Sol? Or just stating the obvious that these corporate oligarchs will continue to eek out Star Wars profits and fans if you are or are not aware that people are still invested into Star Wars? Star Wars is a tradition for a lot of general audience folks. Each year they re-watch the movies with their families. Of the 11 SW films that were made, most of them are bad. That never stopped people from buying into the fanbase in the past.

No I don't really care about Disney. Was just curious about Kennedy, Iger, Chopak etc. JJ's done directing anything big imo. But I agree after the sequels the company's value may be inflated. It's a channel on YT that was talking about this, but it feels almost conspiracy so who knows. They said Universal theme park is doing better than Disney. Dunno if that's true or not.

My feeling is they'll still make money but could have made much more. There's a saturation with SW films with what 5 or 6 released? Sit it out for a while and come back and don't f--k it up like the sequels.

Sadly, as someone who loved this franchise as an original trilogy kid (although I think even as young as 13, I realised the Return of the Jedi wasn’t great) I think you are right.

I guess if you own "everything" and buy out your competition you gain wealth by default?
Ive said this before, people do see franchises. Doesn't matter how bad they are. While Disney Star Wars made a sick load of money, more than it should've in a sane world, you also gotta look at the climbing cost of making these films and how much profit they really bring in.

Just found this- Not doing so well.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/273556/net-income-of-the-walt-disney-company/

And the ONLY reason they stayed afloat was the billions the US tax payers gave them. Something the individual tax payer doesn't get when they hit hard times. Going waaaay back to 2014 Disney got $381,525,727 from the US government. Its all a house of cards held up by corruption and grants.

Yes, I think saturation is the biggest issue facing Disney and Star Wars. They got so invested in this thing and all the media that LucasFilm never really invested in and got greedy. Typical corporate malfeasance, especially from the Mouse. They will still continue to be a power player and use or misuse the franchise however they like.

I have really turned on Star Wars as a media franchise following the prequels and, yeah, most of the Disney stuff hasn't helped. But they are doing more with the franchise and characters than Lucas was doing. Kathleen Kennedy has been involved with LucasFilm since the 80s so it seems like she wanted to set herself up as a steward. I think all of the YouTube conspiracy boys really forget that she has been working in the industry as a powerful producer for 4 decades.

TFA- I was surprised how much I liked it the second time around. I'm assuming it's easily the best in the trilogy, and it's bizarre comparing this to TROS. JJ must have been off his meds when he made that. wink
