WHERE'S WALTER?

RELEASE #1

THE ‘BURBS: EXPANDED LIMITED EDITION LLLCD 1615
Music by Jerry Goldsmith

Limited Edition of 1500 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $21.98

ORDERS BEGIN TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29 2022 AT 12 PM PST

La-La Land Records and Universal Pictures proudly present a remastered and expanded CD re-issue of legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith’s (PLANET OF THE APES, THE OMEN, GREMLINS) original motion picture score to the 1989 big screen cult comedy THE ‘BURBS, starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher, and directed by Joe Dante. Continuing an exciting collaboration with filmmaker Joe Dante that launched with TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE and blossomed with GREMLINS, EXPLORERS and INNER SPACE, composer Jerry Goldsmith unleashed another wildly creative and notable score for the director’s hilarious, knowing suburban romp, THE ’BURBS. Goldsmith expertly balances the film’s rambunctious comedy, dark satire, suspense, action - and its heart too - with a bold orchestral work that sounds better than ever in this remastered and expanded presentation.

Produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, the original 2” analog scoring masters featuring Bruce Botnick’s original 3-track mixes have been newly transferred in high-resolution and meticulously edited to match the performances as selected for the film. Mastered by Matessino, this expanded assembly also includes additional bonus tracks and runs more than 16 minutes longer than any previous release. The spirited art design is by Dan Goldwasser and the exclusive, in-depth liner notes are by writer Jeff Bond and include new interview comments from director Joe Dante and film editor Marshall Harvey. This is a limited edition release of 1500 units.

I'm guessing based on the description that the Varese deluxe version may have included incorrect takes? Or perhaps had pitch errors or something of that nature?

Regardless, an extra 16 minutes in better sound.....no brainer here.

There was a post awhile back where someone said that edits and/or overdubs in the movie were different than what's on the album. Given that the press release talks about the music being meticulously edited to match what's in the movie, that seems like what's been remedied. That being said, it's odd that so many "film version" tracks have been relegated to the bonus section rather than being put in the main program.

This is so exciting! I love this score and listen to it quite a bit and this release really looks like it gives a comprehensive presentation. I foolishly sold my Deluxe Edition a few years back and have regretted it ever since, especially with the prices on the secondary market being just insane. I always wondered if this would ever get any more attention.

This is such a solid batch for LLL and this release is particular is a really welcome surprise.

Neil, on the 'before you ask' front, which would now be after, it looks like the majority of the new stuff is in the additionals area. Track differences in the film mix seem to be with only these two, La-La left, Varese right:

(+:15-ish) 19. Solid Floors / Ask Him [1:39] vs. 19. Ask Him [1:24]
( -:50-ish) 25. Home Furnace [:51] vs. 25. Home Furnace [1:44]

I can believe 15 seconds just got left off a previous track (19), and that 50-ish seconds didn't belong where they were in the earlier Home Furnace track, but nothing obvious jumps out at me from the alt.s which might've been properly separated out from it. Do you know where the rest of that Home Furnace bit went? Or is there some ong ago known typo on varese's disc that I've forgotten? I feel like I'll smack my forehead when you explain it, but it's eluding me.

"Solid Floors" is previously unreleased.

The previous "Home Furnace" was really a short version of "No Beer."

The previous "No Lights" was really "Home Furnace," meaning the actual "No Lights" debuts on this release.

It still hurts my head trying to keep all of this straight.

Smacking my forehead sympathetically for you, then. I guess the nice thing about a Möbius strip is that if you navigate it, you do actually see everything. With your name attached, I knew nothing would be missing, but the whats and wherefores were clearly out of my reach. Thanks for explaining your solving of the hassles which I'm sorry were present to handle.

Well that makes this release even more a no brainer. I know this is a hot take, but this is one of my favorite Goldsmith scores.

I have the original release and happy enough to stick with it. Glad for those who missed first time out to have an opportunity to get this. I am a bit puzzled by the half dozen film versions being placed in the bonus tracks.

As I missed out on both previous releases of this, I am ecstatic to be able to purchase this at a reasonable price… and a better version at that! Thanks LLL (and those who worked on this!)

I have the original Varese 30 minute Club Edition and their expanded Club edition too.
It's a great score. So much fun.
It's up there with EXPLORERS & INNERSPACE amongst my favourite Goldsmith/Dante collaborations.
Was the first 30 min release originally a cancelled MCA album that didn't show, ala HEARTBEEPS and RAGGEDY MAN, or am I just misremembering?

That's what's really strange about this release.

Gremlins is my favorite Dante/Goldsmith collaboration, but The Burbs is a close second (inferior movie, but wonderful score). Will haply "triple dip" for the slightly expanded program and film takes.

Cannot wait, but, isn't 1500 copies just too few?

Same thoughts... So, even if I want to get all 5 titles during next few years or so, I will get this one first, before it's too late...

People aren't buying CD's as much as they used to.
Times are hard for some.
And this title has been released twice before (admittedly the first issue was a highlights edition missing almost half the score).
I'd say 1500 is just about right for it to last well into 2023 and maybe beyond.
And it will come out again, for a future anniversary, no doubt.

But future anniversary will be only in 2024 or 2029 - too much time for waiting! big grin
