I would say that the word "genius" is tossed around far too casually.
He is definitely a gifted storyteller.

And as far as the abuse allegations go, the general public is rarely privy to every minute detail of a situation such as the one that Allen was in.
It would require us to have a window into the soul of a person to find out all the facts--not just the soul of the abuser, but also the soul of the person who might falsely accuse another of the abuse.
And we simply don't have that window.

I do like that the article lays out all the pertinent aspects of the case very cleanly and dispassionately.
Definitely a lot of weirdness to go around, there.

I never warmed to his style of filmmaking, either as an actor or behind the scenes.

Two of my favourite comedies:

Love and Death (1975)

Deconstructing Harry (1997)

And based on my reading of events, Mia is a vindictive…

Ha, you're never going to get a yes/no answer on this board, & not from me either. I agree that genius is banded about far too much, & that Allen is a brilliant film maker...& Mia is vindictive.

I was never a big Woody Allen fan, I'm afraid, although I respect his position and authorship. However, I despise #cancelculture with every fibre of my body, so that makes me like him more than usual.

I'll tell you what IS genius, though--the Red Flannel Underwear bit.

Loved his earlier comedies. Ive always been a fan of "dry" humor. One of the funniest bits in a later film was when he went to the doctor for test results. He was afraid he was going to die of some disease. The doctor said the test results were negative and he thought that meant it was bad news.

Luna: It's hard to believe that you haven't had sex for 200 years.

Miles: 204 if you count my marriage.

Actors certainly respected him and sought to work under his direction. Fourteen received Oscar nominations, and several won awards: Caine, Cruz, Keaton, Blanchett . . .

A great writer, director, and comic actor whom I would never want to share a personal space or conversation with. A bit like Roman Polanski in that regard. They are of the same cloth. It is OK for great artists to be despicable people. There is a long history of it.

A highly over-rated actor/director and an appalling person, IMHO.

Strange how the question was "is he a genius" yet we have know-bugger-alls using this to air their opinions on his personal issues, aligning him with Polanski etc. I will remind everyone that whilst Polanski admitted his offence, not only has Allen denied any wrongdoing, but the evidence wa found to be in his favour and he has been found not guilty of any offence.

Despite the allegations against him a lot of young actresses willingly work with him to this day. He’s never been criminally investigated so I’m not going to pass judgment or assume he’s guilty of anything.

Strange how you would assume this thread would go in any other direction on such a controversial figure.
