CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: 45th ANNIVERSARY
LIMITED EDITION RE-ISSUE (2-CD SET)
Music by John Williams

Limited Edition of 5000 Units

RETAIL PRICE: $29.98
STARTS SHIPPING AUGUST 9

In celebration of John Williams‘ 90th birthday and the 45th Anniversary of the classic film CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Columbia Pictures present CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: 45th ANNIVERSARY REMASTERED LIMITED EDITION, a special 2-CD reissue release featuring our restored and remastered presentation of Academy Award-Winning composer John Williams’ (JAWS, STAR WARS, SCHINDLER’S LIST) original motion picture score to the 1977 landmark feature film CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr. Maestro Williams’ score personifies this classic film’s boundless wonder – searching through, and communicating with, the deep expanses of space as it also explores the unknowable mysteries of the human soul.

This deluxe 2-CD edition, meticulously produced, mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino, in consultation with the composer and director, was inspired by the discovery that Williams had originally planned the soundtrack as a 75-minute double LP. Disc One of this presentation takes its lead from that initial intent, expanding and organizing the score as a grand symphony contained on a single disc. Disc Two offers an equally fresh experience of the score, comprised of discrete versions of cues, alternates and selections not heard on Disc One, plus many of the 1977 album tracks, as well as previously unreleased source music recorded for the film. Matessino’s exclusive liner notes explore this iconic, majestic score, while Jim Titus’ art design handsomely recalls all those joyous feelings generated by one of the greatest science fiction film experiences of all time. This is a limited edition release of 5000 units.

NOTE: Aside from the “45th Anniversary” notation on the CD’s front cover, this re-issue utilizes the same master and overall content as our previous 40th Anniversary 2-CD release.

It means absolutely nothing. Jim, who designed it, was looking for images that were iconic and that were in flight.

Is it worth upgrading from the late 90s expanded disc? Are the album versions different takes and/or specifically written for the album.

Yes, absolutely: Once you get this version - you will never look back!

Check out Tim Burden's terrific tell all interview with Mike Matessino:

Maybe this is some Andrew Garfield level misdirection? But probably not. Thanks for letting us down easy.

This is just a reissue of the 2017 disc. If you have that you really don't need this.

Thread on that release: https://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=123919

The 90s release does have the score in 100% film order (albeit minus the strings heard when Roy and Ronnie make out, some source music, and those low percussion sounds whenever Roy sees the shape) but that's literally the only going for it now as the sound quality is kinda meh (better than the original LP though and I'll die on that hill). The "Expanded" Soundtrack Presentation (which is allegedly the original double lp JW intended to release before Arista's penny pinchers took a whack at it) has some tracks out of order, mixed together, and even bleeding into each other on top of original material recorded specifically for that album, but the raw unaltered tracks (including most of the albums tracks that were ultimately recut a different way by Arista) are present on disc 2. Basically if you want the complete Close Encounters experience you'll need to program it in itunes more or less.

I played the old Varese CD edition of the original LP presentation last week and it sounded fine.
Not great, and certainly not as good as the new LLL edition, but in no way as bad as some around here make out.
These folks must never have heard the EAR BUSTING Varese expansion of PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (to cite just one) or the god-awful sounding MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON CD by Michael Small (recorded from 3 rooms down the hall).
Maybe it's down to the different systems we play and hear them on*, but until someone does a bang-up job of the old LP edition, my Varese CD is going nowhere...and it's still essential to me, after all those years hearing it that way, from age 13 onwards.

*I played the Varese CE3K on a high-end Technics system and an old (but still great) personal Sony CD Walkman for reference and contrast.

It's curious because studios, especially Disney, are fiercely protective of their IP being used in marketing without approval. Star Wars in particular, where there's a laundry list of LFL going after people for using their IP without consent.

We know the labels are incredibly diligent when it comes to studio approvals, so the notion that Jim Titus simply decided off his own back to use Star Wars IP in a marketing campaign for totally unrelated score expansions, without any authorization from Disney/LFL, seems rather baffling to me.

Not to mention R2D2 and a Tie Fighter are actually in the movie!

I notice the disc art in the picture above is different from the disc art in the last release.

Already ordered both this one and ET!

By the way, I did own the original vinyl version decades ago, and aside from the Arista reissue I’ve been hearing on Spotify, it will be finally nice to have the actual CD of the definitive score release,

And finally, I’m putting this on an iTunes playlist, along with the source songs in the film (“Love Song Of The Waterfall” by Slim Whitman, “The Square Song” by the Pickwick Chorus, and “More Than A Feeling” by Boston, along with the 45 RPM version of the CE3K theme and “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” by The Carpenters, even though the latter song is not in the film, it’s release predated CE3K’s release by about two months.)

I only have the earliest CD release of the original soundtrack album which was on Arista as I recall (could be wrong about the label!) and predates the Varese. This was in the early days of the CD era. I believe the CD was the first I ever played when I got my initial CD player by Denon in the ancient times. I've never supplemented that release and still have the old lp gatefold version, too. So this will be a welcome addition to my library.

Already own LLL's CEOT3K and E.T. I would've doubled dip if CEOT3K included the original OST, but I guess it was never in the cards. Still these two grails got expanded and remastered and that's the important thing!
