It has nothing to do with musical quality, only popularity. Of course! As I mentioned on Twitter, it is absolutely going to be a function of the enduring popularity of a film and its music rather some sort of professorial assessment of notes on a page. And just look at how much TV, streaming, animation, and video game music is there. If any of this acts as a gateway to other works, it’s worth it. Especially if that happens to younger listeners—they will discover the works of your favourites too in time. Chris

My criteria was the scores had to be attached to a great film/one that really resonated with me. I also made sure that I nominated 10 different composers. There were a number of composers that I regrettably had to cull from the list: Goldsmith, Bruce Rowland, Kamen, Poledouris, M. Jarre, Silvestri, Korngold, Westlake, and probably my biggest regret, no room for Morricone. An interesting exercise. Probably my biggest surprise, no Ben Hur (Rosza), no North by Northwest (Herrmann) and no Korngold in the top 100 and no Murder on the Orient Express (Bennett) even up to 200. Jurassic Park was the greatest list climber going from No. 96 in 2013 to No. 8 in 2022. Joe Hisaishi also made an appearance for the first time with three placements in 2022 (he doesn't do anything for me but I know he has a lot of fans). The oldest score would be Gone With The Wind (1939) but otherwise the oldest films were in the 1960s. My List: 1 Star Wars 2 LOTR 19 Gladiator 35 Dances With Wolves 43 The Magnificent Seven 91 Henry V (Doyle) 105 - North by Northwest 177 - Ben Hur 199 - Apollo 13 Not placed: Murder on the Orient Express (Rodney Bennett)

What interests me about the Classic 100 is that it was a nationwide popular vote by 215,000 people. Consequently, the choices are going to come from all corners rather than 3,000 passionate film music aficionados—that’s us! On that basis, it’s as fascinating as it is revealing—at least to me. Chris
