keep going back to 2, 1 ,4, 5, 6, 3

does anyone have any insight on physical cd release Mission: Impossible 2 - Music From The Motion Picture Score Expanded Edition ???? MONDO released the vinyl

That one was never released on CD, only on vinyl. IIRC MV mentioned that LLL wanted to release an expanded version of M:i 2 but they couldn't get the rights cause the studio was only interested in doing the MONDO version, or something like that.

Subject to change:

1) Rogue Nation – yeah, this one checks all the boxes and the theme for Solomon Lane is incredibly sinister. Thrilling score.
2) Dead Reckoning – yeah, yeah, Balfe, but holy crap I love this one. He really weaved a great suspense score with a furious action thriller, mixed in the Schifrin theme and came up with an album I’ve already listened two from start to finish a half dozen times.
3) M:I 3 – great score by Giacchino, a breath of fresh air at the time with some wonderfully in your face blasts of screaming action.
4) Fallout – the bongos get to be a bit much and the air of dread gets thick, but there is some great stuff in here. That Helicopter Chase needs an official release.
5) M:I 4 – while I love a few of the cues dearly, this one is a little on the goofy and cheesy side. Probably because the film is the lightest film in the series. It’s damned good fun in spots, but for some reason, I don’t go back to it much.
6) M:I – really kinda restrained Elfman, but the film is a bit of a slog, so the score enforces rather than counters it. However, he delivers a rip snorting finale.
7) M:I 2 – dire. Just godawful.

1. Rogue Nation. By a lot. I enjoy all the scores, but this one had it all, was a great balance of old, classic themes and new music, and just added everything to the film.

2. Dead Reckoning
3. Ghost Protocol
4. Fallout
5. M:I
6. M:I 3
7. M:I 2

While Fallout still resides at the very bottom of the list for me (in fact, I don't even like it being ON my list), I have to give credit where credit is due.
I thoroughly enjoyed the score for M.I.7 DRpt1 and thought it really pumped the film up and along.
I don't know if it's a case of that Balfe fella getting better or the 4 or 5 co-composers on the gig were upping his game?
It/they certainly helped Zimmer on the last Bond score.

Since this is a subjective thread, I will offer up my list of Mission Impossible music favs:

The first four are, to me, equal in entertainment for my ears. I never get tired of these four scores.

01: Mission Impossible 6: Fallout - superb score with subtle themes throughout. Balfe's track for "Stairs and Rooftops" is exhilarating and his "Scalpel and Hammer" should never be listened to while sitting in a traffic jam.

02. Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning - Again Balfe offers up a range of themes which conjure up a theatrical event. His "The Entity" theme is foreboding and claustrophobic and the "Chasing Grace" track is pulsating and exciting. Great rush hour music.

03. Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation - Joe Kraemer's score is awesome and to think he had to push up his schedule to get this gem done before an early release. His "Solomon Lane" track is superb which gives a reptilian sound to it and his "The Syndicate" track transitions into a beautiful Moroccan "The Plan" version.

04. Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol - Michael Giacchino creates a brilliant score with some ethnicity thrown in with panache. I love his track "A Man, a Plan, a Code, Dubai". It reminds me of the days when John Barry would write his Bond scores between 1963 and 1971 with themes from other countries such as Japan and Istanbul.

And now the rest...

05. Mission Impossible 3: Giacchino's score is a unique listening experience on its own but the movie was the worse in the series which left me not wanting any part of it. The main title version is probably the least inspired of all the films and TV series, including the 1988 series. It feels flat and tired, much like the film.

06. Mission Impossible 1: Danny Elfman's attempt to bring a Bernard Herrmann style to the first MI movie. I bought the original score back in 1996 and rarely listen to it except for the end train sequence. Otherwise, not my favorite.

07. Mission Impossible 2: John Woo's take on Ethan Hunt and the almost invisible team of other characters. The score is done by Hans Zimmer and his use of heavy metal and Nu metal leaves my ears bleeding. This score is truly impossible to listen to by itself, but than I am not being subjective.

When the third movie was released I left the theater thinking this series was done. I did not want to see another Tom Cruise/Mission Impossible film. However, when the fourth film, Ghost Protocol, came out and the reviews were favorable I decided to give it one more try. Fortunately, the series has been slamming them out of the ballpark ever since.

I can tell a lot of people dislike the Balfe scores on here, but I play his two more than any others. the Fallout score is possibly my most played score of the last 4 years. So, I'd be a hypocrite saying I don't like it. I guess I LOVE it. Dead Reckoning, too!

I'll copy/paste what I wrote in another, recent thread over on JWFAN:

Films:

The first is in a class of its own. De Palma infusing his technical skill in a film that is more thriller than action adventure (like the later ones). But on a definite second place is M:I 2. I absolutely dug how Woo transferred many of his Hong Kong ingredients into a slicker, denser, more expensive Hollywood format in the 90s, with this film and FACE/OFF, in particular (as opposed to the more grainy, less expensive setups of his earlier films, like HARD BOILED). Chockful of visual identity!

The remaining films are OK entertainment, with some very spectacular setpieces, but lack any of the auteur stamps of the first two. Haven't seen the new one yet.

Scores:

Zimmer's M:I 2 is in a class of its own here. Absolutely drop-dead gorgeous fusions of rock guitars, Hispanic flavours, wordless vocal, awesome power anthems and a fine love theme. By far the best of the series (not counting Schifrin's music for the original series). On second place is Elfman's original. A crucial turning point in his career, with his newfound love of counterpoint and dense landscapes. Didn't like it at first, but have come to really appreciate its many subtle layers.

The remaining scores in the series, I can give or take.

Subject to change of course:

1. 5
2. 6
3. 1
4. 3
5. 4
6. 2

It's interesting how my opinion of the movie clouds or shades my opinion of the music as for me much of it is so tied together. I don't like MI:2 very much as a movie and while I like what Zimmer did, I can't help but put it at the bottom while I LOVE the Fallout movie and so probably have that score too high.

Fun times!

After seeing and listening a bunch to the new film, my new ranking would be largely based upon how often I listen them:

1. Rogue Nation
2. Fallout
3. Dead Reckoning
4. 1
5. Ghost Protocol
6. III
7. M:I-2

Fallout continues to get listened to a lot, so it's right where it belongs for me. The Zimmer score is light years better than the movie, in my opinion, having just re-watched all M:I movies with my boys in anticipation of the new one.

It’s been a loooong time since I heard it so my memory could be playing tricks on me, but i seem to recall really loving Silvestri’s rejected score for the first Mission: Impossible. I’m certain I liked it a lot more than Elfman’s replacement.

I really enjoy all the MI film scores and each composer did a great job incorporating and adapting Lalo Schifrin’s themes.

I was a very late appreciater of Lorne Balfe’s Fallout score (probably brought on by the very negative way Kraemer was treated and my general dislike of previous Balfe scores up to that point), but now really enjoy it - it’s a bit of a rediscovery.

Difficult to rank but here goes!

1. Rogue Nation
2. III
3. I
4. Dead Reckoning
5. Fallout
6. II
7. Ghost Protocol (only because I have only heard this in the film and not in isolation).

All very good efforts though.

Glad to see at least two or three other likeminded folks put Zimmer's score at the top, or near the top (usually, there are none). Keep fighting the good cause, guys! smile
