The English director Carol Reed made his last film "Follow Me!" (aka "The Public Eye") in 1972. He died at 69 after a long illness in 1976. I'm not particularly familiar with his life and times but I've seen quite a few of his films, of course.

My question to those who might know the answer:

Did Reed have any plans to make another film after "Follow Me!" or was he practically retired and/or too ill to work on another project?

You must know of the 1994 biography by Nicholas Wapshott. If not available from a library, you might search in Google Books and see if you can tease out the answer there.

I found this biography online in the meantime, so I can now answer my question myself (see p. 331-335).

After "Follow Me" there were at least two more projects Reed was more or less involved with. He was offered the film "Conduct Unbecoming" but unfortunately Reed turned it down. It could have been a very interesting film with him as director. The version shot later with Julie Christie, Michael York, Christopher Plummer and Richard Attenborough is also worth seeing.

Reed wanted to realise another project together with Graham Greene. A story set in the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The film did not come to fruition due to lack of funding. In general, Reed had great difficulty finding the necessary money for his films in the last years as a director. Consequently, he was happy when a producer like Hal B. Wallis came along and offered him a film.

Reed's health gradually went downhill after "Follow Me". Little exercise, heavily overweight and a lot of alcohol. In 1976 he first had a heart attack with a relatively mild course, which he survived well after a short convalescence. He did not survive the second heart attack at home in bed.
