Does anybody out there know of one single that made #1 but can't stand the song? I can think of three examples:

"Honey" - Bobby Goldsboro '68
"Harper Valley P.T.A." - Jeannie C. Riley '68 again
"Disco Duck" - Rick Dees & His Gang Of Idiots '76

Question:
Do the songs have to have reached #1 on a particular chart?

No, just ones that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.

"You Light Up My Life" - Debbie Boone (It was number 1 for 13 consecutive weeks, which is probably why I grew to hate it...it played over and over and over).

Funny, I had to go listen to "Disco Duck." I don't ever remember hearing it back in the day. Now that I have, I agree that it's the worst of those mentioned so far. (But only by default. I actually like all the others mentioned).

I was in high school when Disco Duck was a hit on the radio and I remember finding the duck vocal very annoying. I remember thinking that I liked the music and background vocals and if only it didn't have the duck vocal....

The flip side of the 45 of Disco Duck had an instrumental version and the promo 12" single which I still have combined the two sides together into one 6+ minute version.

This is it here. For some reason Rick Dees is called "Ricky Dees".

I nominate "Ballad of the Green Berets." #1 for five weeks.

A number of novelty songs hit #1 in the charts back in the late 1950s and 1960s. (Not too many in modern times.)
Among them:

  • "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" [1958/59 - 4 weeks]
  • "The Battle of New Orleans" [1959 -5 weeks]
  • "Alley Oop" [1960 - 1 week]
  • "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" [1960 - 1 week]
  • "Mr. Custer" [1960 - 1 week]
  • "The Stripper" [1962 - 1 week]
  • "Monster Mash" [1962 - 2 weeks]
  • "Ringo" [1964 - 1 week]
  • "The Ballad of the Green Berets" [1966 - 5 weeks]

I don't mind the singles on the list except for "Mr. Custer" by Larry Verne which I thought was dumb.

It’s hard for me to hear that song now without thinking about what a scumbag the songwriter Joseph Brooks was, so for me the song is "tainted".

Difficult to say -- I was never one to follow weekly charts and hits, not even when I was a kid. I was mostly into non-chart music. So I would need some databases or resources to choose. And it would obviously be from the 80s onwards, as I know very little about the popular pop music of preceding decades (I like a lot of music from those decades, but little of it was chart hits, and I've certainly never paid attention to the BAD ones). I'm impressed by the ease with which many of you pull out these items.

That's how I feel about it now, too. frown

As for the novelty songs, I think they should be given a pass.
By and large they were made for the purpose of being unironically bad, whereas regular pop tunes are the opposite.

No idea if it was number 1, but Three wheels on my wagon? Lol.

The UK Charts has a database and archival section which I find pretty handy when looking up chart placings and release dates mainly for 80s stuff, Thor...

I scanned the list of #1's in my Billboard Hot 100 book and a couple of stinkers jumped out:

Lovin' You - Minnie Riperton (1975)
Macarena - Los Del Rio (1996)

"Brand New Key" written and sung by folk music singer Melanie and went to number 1 the end of 1971 - early 1972.

Then there's Chuck Berry's "My Ding A Ling". I can't believe one of the founding fathers of rock n' roll's sole #1 single is this piece of junk that came from the same man who gave us "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Roll Over Beethoven", and "School Days"? I bet this is one of the songs that The Rolling Stones DIDN'T cover.

The Stones version is more commonly known as "Schoolboy Blues"!
