An expanded Reivers would be a dream release for me; I love Williams' Americana style, the banjo, the harmonica, the fiddle, the blues and honkytonk influences. This score simply does indeed soar, as many previous posts have stated. If my memory serves, when Lukas Kendall looked into this when he was releasing some stuff from the CBS catalogue, there were issues with the music having ownership from at least 2 different copyright holders, making it hard to license, at the time. But I'm sure more difficult licenses have been secured in the years since, and with John Williams actively endorsing his expanded scores in recent years, maybe there's a much bigger chance now of this coming out than in previous years. Mr. Matessino, work your magic!

I was too young to be aware of THE REIVERS when it first appeared in theatres (my first encounter with Williams would be THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE a few years later).

My first time hearing this great score was when Williams conducted his narrated suite for THE REIVERS as part of his debut concert as the new conductor of the Boston Pops. I was watching the PBS broadcast and the performance was electrifying. I immediately sought out the album and it has remained a favorite ever since.

Eventually I picked up the Varese CD Club re-issue of the album and later the slightly expanded Columbia CD. If the complete score can be rescued, I'd be all for it. I'm also curious about the rejected Schifrin score.

I did not imagine at that time, that Willliams would vault into superstardom. But he did just that. "Jaws", then "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters..."...and then "The Fury" ...and then "Superman". Williams was at the top,

That is a very broad, generalized overview of how Williams' career taking off seemed to me.

Like I posted above I thought that I remembered that it was a problem with finding the masters to make a decent expanded release that was the issue of it not probably ever being done. Licensing may be a problem too, but am I wrong about this? This is one of my all time favorite Williams scores!! I would kill my own mother to get an expanded release! (Just Kidding, sorta)

It's probably worth noting that the film's director, Mark Rydell, is still around. He will be 93 years old this coming March (2022). After his work on The Reivers, he and John Williams made The Cowboys & Cinderella Liberty, then years later, The River.

I think that The Reivers is such a unique film that I've had trouble pairing it with another film or score similar to it. If there were a double bill release (somewhat like the pairing of Barefoot in the Park & The Odd Couple that Varese put out) then I'd have to pick The Cowboys. Both scores would fit on one CD.

I picked this score recently in another thread regarding picking one score that you had to live with forever, with no other scores (or something like that). And I picked "The Road to Memphis" as the standout track.

I started my John Williams LP collection (as Johnny Williams) at the age of 12, with what was in the local record stores, such as M-SQUAD, WAGON TRAIN, and CHECKMATE.

Also:
THEMES TO REMEMBER (Stanley Wilson and His Orchestra) (Decca DL-4481/DL-74481) (1962)
(GOOD PERFORMANCES, but not easy to find in stereo) (1962)
(Stanley Wilson was Johnny Williams' boss at Revue Studios.)
.....Wide Country Theme (Williams)
.....Alcoa Premiere Theater Theme (Williams)
.....Wagon Train ("Tomorrow" Theme) (Williams)

I made innumerable reel-to-reel tapes from the TV speaker terminals onto my 3M Wollensak reel-to-reel recorder.

Later, when Sony Trinitron TVs included an "audio jack" and Teac debuted the audio cassette player/recorder,
I went to town.

The rest is history. If something came out by Johnny Williams, I got it. And don't forget his other early Columbia LPs, as well as his music debuted in the 1960s on Columbia by his friend Andre Previn. Later, THE REIVERS was an automatic purchase when it came out. And what a great score it was! Spielberg was so right to notice it.

I haven't done a minute-by-minute analysis of the amount of score in the film like others have done.
For those of you looking for a "complete" version, how much score is still missing? I did extract the End Credits from the DVD years ago. But how much MORE in minutes is left to unearth? Just curious.
