I have a Kindle. Bought from amazon in 2012 (I was reminded today). I've only used it a few times (a mere three books occupy the thing) and it was last updated in 2016. The other night I ordered from amazon the book "Return to Tomorrow" (as recommended by LK in one of his blogs) but it did not "arrive". Called amazon today, only to be told that the reason I never got it was because my Kindle was out of date and I needed a new one if I still wanted to "receive" the book.

Still a lap-top luddite, can any of the more computer-erudite posters on here advise me on this? Do Kindles have a shelf-life??

According to Wikipedia:

"The Kindle's operating system updates are designed to be received wirelessly and installed automatically during a period in sleep mode in which Wi-Fi is turned on."

"The fourth [2011] and later generation Kindles, Touch, Paperwhite (all generations), Voyage and Oasis (all generations) can display AZW, AZW3, TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, and PRC files natively. HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP are usable through Amazon's conversion service."

As they probably still use the same or similar ebook formats, it sounds like the problem is how the ebooks are downloaded or transmitted to the e-reader. You'd think they'd still support whatever method was used for your device, it hasn't been that long, and the world of e-readers don't need an new operating system or hardware every year just to read books.
You need to inquire exactly what the issue is, and how to circumvent it without buying a new device, unless you have money to burn.

All Kindles with 3G connectivity and lower are losing cellular connection because the phone companies aren't supporting anything lower than 4G as far as I know. Does your Kindle have 3G and is that how you download books? I'm sure you also have Wi-Fi on your Kindle and that will still work. Amazon has been sending out $50 coupons toward a new Kindle to some people that have 3G Kindles.

Worst case scenario you could sell your Kindle back to Amazon for about $5 or less and get a 25% off coupon toward a new Kindle. With the frequent sales you could probably get a new one for about $75. There is a new Paperwhite that is coming out this month with a larger screen and USB C.
