So my brother and I were long ago fans of the Canadian comedy duo Wayne & Shuster. Not only did they have multiple (lengthy) appearances on the Ed Sullivan (Sullystone... blame the Flintstones...) Show, they produced many comedy specials for the CBC. Their comedy was always historically and intellectually based - strong dialogue and language works.

My question is and remains: where the Hell are the multiple Bluray collections of their works? This stuff is comedy gold, well worth release.

Curious.

(Apologies if I have queried about this in the past... but I don't think I have... ?... smile )

For some reason the name of Wayne and Shuster sounds familiar to me, but I can't think of how I know them. Maybe I just heard them referred to in TV promos.

I had access to Canadian TV (CBC, CTV, and an independent station) for about 15 years, from ca. 1975 to 1990. Then the cable company stopped carrying it, and of course my antenna days were long gone by then.

I miss it. It was a whole different flavor. We used to watch Tiny Talent Time in the 70s, and laugh at the corny theme song. The Canadian stations always had Star Trek on the weekends, and they were the only place I ever saw Space: 1999 before DVD. The last series I watched on Canadian TV was Street Cents in 1990. It was meant for teenagers, but I loved it anyway.

I even miss the commercials. My favorites were the ones with song jingles, like for Corn Flakes and Wonderbra. And there was a board game called Pop-O-Matic Trouble with a proto-rap jingle: "...here comes sister, look out Jack— you've got Trouble so you go back! That's Pop-O-Matic Trouble." Good times.

I have no connection to Wayne & Shuster per se, but I know them because they did a show called WAYNE & SHUSTER TAKE AN AFFECTIONATE LOOK AT... in 1964, a 6-part, humorous documentary series about other comedy icons like W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers. That's because John Williams wrote the theme and the score to a couple of episodes. I would love to see this released for that reason alone. I have the W.C. Fields episode as part of a promo reel from CBC; for this episode Williams is only credited with the theme, while another composer (whose name escapes me at the moment) is credited with the score. But I know that Williams wrote a few of the others.

I wonder if in some quarters CBC may be afraid to issue some broadcasts because of what they think may be culturally offensive material. Never thought that myself when I watched them... they just sought to have good fun and be miraculously silly.

Some youtube material is around. smile
