That "chairman of the bored" is an extremely obvious one. That ball was not in front in the net, it was already in the goal.
I have yet to find out what is to be so great about NMD. His main act was that he "ironically" deliberately told mediocre or unfunny jokes and explicitely in the style of the "unfunny uncle". That stint gets old veeeeeeeeeery quickly.
Then there is that "GOAT" status that is annoying because that is comming from people who only understand English and have no knowledge of any other commedian that does not perform in English but are (much) better than that supposed GOAT. But most of all it seems to me the result of a self fulfilling prophecy: you decided you like him and so you will; no more critical thinking. Once you have a loyal following, they will eat whatever they are fed.

Great work. Congrats.

Stu, you don't even necessarily need to "find out what's so great about NMD".
You only need to know that it's completely daft to stink up an RIP thread with the kind of criticism you posted.

Correct opinions: sure.
Proper place: nope.

What baffling opinions, too.

As someone who has watched a shitload of his interviews, routines, and even listened to some audio-only interviews, one thing I eventually learned is: Norm MacDonald is thoughtful, methodical, and pre-meditated in the joke and delivery. Even Conan eventually started to recognize the twinkle in Norm's eye when he was about to strike with a particularly groaning groaner and pointed it out.

I only wish other comedians put as much thought into the jokes and delivery as he did. And he wasn't shy about making light of "topical" people such as Michael Jackson, O.J. Simpson, and then a few years ago Bill Cosby. In fact, one of the things that got him fired was a west-coast guy who was friends with O.J. and called Norm into his office, where -- as Norm would later describe the scene -- give weird football analogies about how Norm wasn't right for SNL and not funny, leading to him being fired.

And he has no compunctions about long drawn-out old-guy jokes, hence the five minute plus infamous moth joke he told on Conan.

He also was a fan of speaking off the cuff around the planed jokes. As Conan once told: they do -pre-interviews where he talks to the guest before air and they find out what is going to be discussed. Norm wouldn't do pre-interviews. And when they tried, he wouldn't speak about anything said in the pre-interview.

By the way, anybody who saw the "Chairman of the bored" Conan EPIC, you might also enjoy another one where he was kind of hitting on this black girl with big boobs (I think Rushumba or some such name). Not on the same level, but still good fun.

I'll have to search for it, but in the last few years we had a thread for Norm here...

Fair enough.
Except one makes me laugh, one doesn't.
And that is the only thing of importance in comedy.

Long video of clips from his short-lived sports how. Like me, you don't have to watch sports to laugh your ass off at these SNL "Fake News"-like jokes:

Norm was more a humourist than a comedian. His jokes were quick strikes that made you think long after the initial sting wore off. I adore his subversive wit.
