Here's a trip down memory lane from an old 1972 'Burt Bacharach TV Special'. It contains a stunning version of 'Wives and Lovers' and a vaguely familiar theme at the 24 min mark.....
Was thinking about this theme the other day while watching an 1970 ABC series with commercials for other then-contemporary ABC series. TV was an event back then. Interesting to hear how someone conducts a rehearsal (the ABC theme at 25 min). Is that typical? And did everyone in the music biz sound like they were in the Mob? "Play it with respect." Or you'll be playing with the fishes, if you gets what I mean, my friend.
Do you think this is how Bacharach would normally talk to his players or do you think he was just over-doing it a bit for the camera?
Quite possibly, but Bacharach is a notorious "Perfectionist"
Looking at the old pros in the orchestra, they probably played it the way they wanted. Hard to tell if they were impressed or amused by his enthusiasm. Is a piece of art like this the result of someone's anal vision or a group effort by pros who know what is required and can do so from accumulated experience and camaraderie? Both? Whatever, it's amazing what ineffable ingredients go into something that we eventually take for granted. Apparently Angie Dickinson didn't (hubba hubba).
ABC Movie Intro Logo Through the Years (1963-present)
The Star Tunnel theme (starting at 6:59) was the best and most exciting format music any movie on TV ever had. When I was a teenager and that Star Tunnel thing would play, and then came a James Bond movie, I was in heaven.
Slightly off topic, I think Burt's show with Barbra Streisand is fantastic.
Her version of "One Less Bell To Answer/A House Is Not A Home" is amazing and ended up on her "Barbra Joan Streisand" album.
She also performed a song that is finally being released on her upcoming album "Release Me 2" from this show called "Be Aware."
Here's an excerpt from that show:
James
A truly breathtaking performance, as equal in my mind as the album version. Really showcases Barbra's genius for phrasing and dramatic intent, the cleverness of this melody's arrangement, and of course the power of the Bacharach/David team.

Here's more of Barbra and Burt talking about billing and singing "Close To You." This also has her singing "Be Aware."

Burt's arrangement at the end of 'Be Aware' is very weird....very Herrmann-esque....creepy ! "Easy Listening"....you must be joking ?
