Thank you for your perfect analysis.

It shows the artistry of Goldsmith (and the director).

I have understood and as a music aficionado (not only in theory, I play the piano) I also know the Great American Songbook.

But does your analysis answer the question, why the theme still seems so attractive for following generations? I am sure that musicians like Mendoza, Blanchard and the Metropole Orchestra are aware of what you have written. But is the technique (style of the seventies linking to the past) the reason for its popularity?

Or is it just the timeless quality of the melody associating with melancholy and introspection, as you wrote? I think that's the reason, because it is universal in its effect: a person in Japan will understand this as well as a listener in India or the United States.

Not sure how to answer your question. What draws anyone to any piece of music? Lots of intangibles in the equation. I do think the combination of the melody with the melancholic/introspective harmonic structure would be a big part of the appeal.
