Sorry to sound like a texting tween, but OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had no idea this was remotely an option (I was pretty sure something had been composed, but I thought that, like Babe and Disney's The Kid, it was possible nothing had actually been recorded). "When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer." (On the bus today I saw the "Nakatomi Tower" for the nth time. I heard at the time from people who worked on Die Hard that it was actually a huge pain-in-the-ass to use that building despite it being mere feet from the Fox lot, but all those L.A. real locations make a wonderful film even better).

I've always felt bad that Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein received so much rejection of their work late in their respective careers. We fans are so lucky that this stuff is being made available. While Goldsmith had his fair share of rejected scores I don't think he had to complain about the amount of assignments he got (unlike Bernstein). He also did his fair share of replacing other composers (The River Willd, First Knight, Air Force One). So it's not like his style went out of vogue or something. Till his death he was an in demand composer.

Barry, Bernstein, and Goldsmith all had quite a few scores rejected in the last decade and a half of their careers, but Goldsmith also composed a lot of replacement scores after the work of others was rejected. Can anyone think of examples of Barry and Bernstein doing this? Well...I'll answer my own question with one: Barry replaced Bernstein on The Scarlet Letter (both lovely scores though I prefer the Bernstein by far and consider it one of his greatest works ever). Any others for Barry? Yavar

Speaking of which, I would love to hear a bit more of what Elmer wrote for A River Runs Through It. You and me both! That theme is just wonderful and I think the whole score was recorded so I really hope someone puts it out. Yavar

Yavar I feel like this is probably the last time we are going to be able to hear a new Goldsmith release without having heard a note of it before. Like the days when anticipating the release of a new film with Jerry’s name attached to it in a preview. Kind of a sad but grateful occasion. Here's a confession I've not made before, even privately. I bought the DVD of THE SALAMANDER the morning of its release, unseen; then the Prometheus re-recording, unheard. Years later, both discs remain unopened. Initially I intended to watch the movie first, but eventually I realized something: At some level it became comforting to know I have one Jerry Goldsmith score and film left to experience, both already in hand. My PUBLIC EYE already has been ordered, since I'm a completist (even though I've been disappointed by every other rejected Goldsmith I've heard). But since by mindset I also prefer originals to most re-recordings, maybe SALAMANDER shouldn't be the one I leave for last.
