This blows the old CD out of the water. Sound quality is immaculate.

I came to this music via the film first, so the complete opposite of Senor Graham.
Hearing the juxtaposition of the lovely, dreamy music under Susannah York reading the stories, against the startling sounds of the house/dementia, was film music brilliance at its best.
The film, as I remember it, is a bit of a mind fuck, wherein you're never sure what is real and what is happening inside York's tortured/crumbling mind.
Such was Altman in the 70s.
And what freedom the film afforded Williams.
I'm still awaiting my copy of this, together with ALWAYS and some other goodies from Intrada.
Patience is a virtue, or so they say smile

I'd forgotten how much Track 5/Reflections foreshadows his scarier music in CE3K.
The sound on this new CD is quite a significant upgrade on the previous issue.
It's quite a startling score, that's for sure.
Fascinating stuff.

Still no answer to the Track 10 title issue.
Original LP Promo = Nightwatch Rise.
CD issue(s) = The Night Witch Ride.

I saw this film in the theater when it was released and loved the film and the score. Bought the promo LP at Rose Records in Chicago.

There is a book devoted solely to the music in Kubrick's films. Someone should write a book about the use of music in Altman's films.

His use of Williams is well known on this board (The Long Goodbye is a favorite Williams score for me) plus Altman got exceptionally eerie scores from Tom Pierson (Quintet) and Gerald Busby (Three Women).

Then there was a score by Rosenman (Countdown), the famous song from MASH (Mandel), the poignant use of Leonard Cohen songs in McCabe and Mrs Miller, Annie Ross songs in Shortcuts, and the incredibly ambitious use of original songs in Nashville.

I am leaving out a lot, as Altman had a lengthy if spotty career, but the above is just off the top of my head.

Williams was originally signed up for CALIFORNIA SPLIT, wasn't he, or am I remembering wrong?

The sound on this is extraordinary. I'm appreciating the score in a whole new way. Already loved it, now really really love it.

Message(s) for Thor -

1) Did you end up getting this new release?

2) Did you cover the film in one of your movie threads from years ago? If you did, and can resurrect it, that would be great. I might not be able to offer much in the way of brainy insight, but it's a film well worth discussing.

Trying to answer you briefly via iPhone.

No, I did not get it. I’m content with my old Prometheus release.

I have covered the film and score well in lectures and articles over the years, but mostly in Norwegian, which would be useless to you. Probably also in some old threads, but it’s a hassle to search, copy and paste on my phone. Feel free to offer brainy insights, though. I’m still lurking around these parts. smile

I second this post. This was one of those rare times where my jaw drops at how incredible a recording can sound, especially something from 1972! I had the previous release and the Quartet simply trounces it. Mike, you continuously impress me! Well done and thank you so very much!

I think it's a great film, and a great score. The marriage of music with the "images" (tee hee) is masterful. "The Love Montage" plays out like no other Love Montage you'll ever see or hear.

It's just the kind of creepy, headscratching film I adore. And the Williams score is amazing. I do have to turn the sound down when Stomu Yamashta does his grunting and groaning, because it's not the first time the neighbours have called the police thinking that my wife is deservedly murdering me again.

For anyone in the U.S. who wants to add the film itself to your shelf, the excellent Arrow Blu-ray (which includes a music appreciation featurette by musician/author Stephen Thrower) is currently on sale at Hamilton Book for just $6.95 (before $4 flat rate shipping), which is something like 83% off MSRP: https://www.hamiltonbook.com/robert-altmans-images-blu-ray

Just set my recorder for this film. I'm not familiar with film or score so am looking forward to watching, Thanks for posting details of the Talking Pictures screening, Kev.
