Looks good, although it would be nice to see a little more footage of the transfer than appears in that promo.

It’s a shame that Warner is seemingly hesitant to release public domain films as the transfer on HBOMAX is supposed to be very good.

The only Warner PD film that I can recall getting a DVD release was Irving Berlin's THIS IS THE ARMY. But films like LIFE WITH FATHER or THE BIG TREES haven't gotten even that.

Oh man, enough already with the disgusting domain prints, this is great news. But Ray, no DVD, just Blu?

I did the master late last year and held the release til Father's Day time. Right now I'm knee-deep in a big soundtrack restoration job (full tracks for series of shorts - not scores) and doing looping for a film I did last February. Not sure when I can get around to doing a DVD master for LIFE WITH FATHER. If I can squeeze it in I'll post an update.

Hi, Ray,

is there any way to order the blu-ray from Germany?

Life With Father has always been one of my favourite comedies thanks to William Powell's wonderful prrformance and certainly deserves better than those washes PD presentation. This is especially annoying because German TV bought the film in the mid 80s and it was shown in a glorious Technicolor print. Same thing with the 1937 version of A Star is Born where the Kino DVD which was supposedly taken from the original negative but still has none of the bright colors from my VHS.

I seem to recall reading that the Kino Blu-ray of the 1937 A Star is Born was taken from David O. Selznick’s personal nitrate print rather than the original negatives, which is probably why it doesn’t have any of those bright colors (I believe the negatives are with Warner, who I think own the rights to the film). I don’t know whether HBOMAX is available in Germany yet or not, but the service supposedly has a transfer of Life With Father that’s supposed to be on par with Warner’s most recent Technicolor restorations (meaning extremely good).

I just checked the DVD cover of A Star is Born. You're absolutely right in that it was taken from a nitrate print and not the negative. I have no idea who owns the film right now. It was one of those classics that somehow fell into public domain mike Life with Father. These two films along with another 1937 Selznick production Nothing Sacred are my holy grails of early Technicolor films where I have not yet found a DVD or blu-ray with decent colors.

I am pretty sure we don't have HBOMAX here in Germany. Unlike Netflix or Disney+ HBO hasn't yet reached our shores. But thank you for your efforts.

Kino reissued Nothing Sacred a few years ago using the Scott Macqueen restoration using the fine-grain master (which are owned by Disney through their acquisition of most of the Selznick library), or were the colors on that one also not to your liking?

This actually looks good. I wasn't aware of this version. Looks like I have to get that one.

Assuming you can play a US blu-ray, do an on-site order and I will send you an additional invoice for shipping to Germany.

Hi, Ray,

I have a multi-region player so thankfully I can play any blu-ray. I have just placed the order through the website. To get to the payment process I had to create a fictional US shipping adress. The data itself is correct except for country and state. So please send me an invoice für the additional shipping costs.

Thank you so much for your efforts.
