I don't know if there is a thread for this but last week I stumbled across this gem in a record store--a very well put together 3 CD set of music by:

Ellington, Miles Davis, Schifrin, Mancini, E Bernstein, Hopkins, Warren Barker, Barry, Buddy Morrow, L Stevens, North, Mandel, J Lewis, Solal, Komeda, etc.

I had most of the tracks on their original albums but I couldn't resist picking this up. The track order jumps from composer to composer and back again, so all of the Elmer Bernstein tracks aren't together. An extremely nice collection.

What label is it on?

I have two crime jazz box sets on the Moochin' About label. Both are very good content-wise. They were cheap, and as I already had much of the material, I bought them to fill gaps.

One set was better than the other in terms of sound; it sounded primarily like it used tape (or digitized tape) sources. The other had a lot of vinyl rips, and was not as good.

Looks a decent set, I've just ordered it. Some stuff on there I don't have. What's the sound quality like?

I just finished playing the entire set, a casual listening. Sound quality varies. Sometimes very good, sometimes not. 60 jazz noir tunes nonetheless at a great price. No complaints.

And can I just say, just because I'm feeling snarky, all the more refreshing because there are no alternate takes, false starts, bugle calls, saloon tunes, or anything else that generally falls into that category called "extras."

Do you have a direct link? I'm having a hard time finding it. Which Amazon? UK? US? Thanks!

Go to Amazon/US. CDs and Vinyl. Type in Jazz Noir. First thing that pops us. Amazon's choice.

It's hard to miss it, it's the one with the enticing coverwink

Ah yes, the dreaded honky tonk saloon tunes on expanded releases. They get skipped over on every listen.

I love Kai Winding's version of Experiment in Terror!

I received mine yesterday and so far it's such a fun listen. Since they're taking music from films and television soundtracks, this actually would be appropriate on the other side of the board.

As I listen to this and enjoy the music on its own terms (since I am not that familiar with many of the films) this feels a little like a compilation of library cues. This isn't a knock, I love 50's and 60's jazzy library music from places like the Capitol and KPM libraries. This whole collection is right up my alley.
