Ellington
Sun Ra Arkestra

Ellington is not a band.

Ellington would disagree with you. You must know more about Ellington than he does. Congratulations on your impressive expertise.

Well, that you refer to "Ellington" has "he" rather than "they" is an indication of Ellington being a person rather than a band. :-)

Read a book.

a-ha

Been a fan since '85, have all their releases and bootlegs and solo stuff etc, and I've seen them live numerous times.

Do you have all of Magne's soundtracks?

I don't actually, I think the only one I have is Hotel Oslo. I don't have the Beatles score either, now I check. I do have his solo albums, though I don't have any of the Timbersound or Apparatijk stuff either. Not quite a Magne completist, though I've always preferred Morten's solo work of the three (I don't think Magne and Paul are particularly good vocalists to be honest, or Lauren either for that matter).

Supertramp.

(I have lots of other favourites, but wanted to keep it to just one per your parameters).

Did you get to see them live?

TI KNIVER I HJERTET soundtrack from 1994 is interesting, i should get that one.

I have the opening cue, which was "released" on a rare CD that was only available with the Norwegian film music book MØRKETS MUSIKK. Wonderful, moody cue.

No, alas. Their "classic" line-up (with Hodgson) disbanded when I was just a small kid. The later version, sans Hodgson, toured up untill the late 2000s, but they never came to Norway. However, I DID manage to see Roger Hodgson solo when he visited the Norwegian Wood festival in 2010. That's something.

This one?

Otto's Tema is indeed good. The soundtrack is expensive at Discogs, 25 Euros.

Yes, I think that's the one. It starts with a little bit of dialogue. Didn't realize it was also out on a promo single.

I left off the essential Larry Young from the Tony Williams Lifetime listing, reason enough for me to burn in hell

I'm not 'supposed' to do anything, but it's comforting to know that if I sway off the beaten thread, someone will let me know.

P.S. Here are a few others:

Miles Davis 1st great quintet, late 50s

Miles Davis 2nd great quintet, mid-late 60s

Captain Beefheart 1979 band

Hi Henry. My favorite band of all time is The Beatles. Probably always will be.

By the way, Henry: I saw Huey Lewis and the News in concert back in the 1980s. As an interesting side note, the opening act was Stevie Ray Vaughn. Both put on a great show!!

Sparks

Their first three releases on Island Records in the seventies still get a lot of plays from me.

Sparks for me too. Saw them live a few years ago and was blown away by the energy shown by the Maels despite their advancing years. They’ve produced around 25 studio albums in many different styles, but what they all have in common is great tunes, fabulous musical arrangements and above all wise and witty lyrics.

The strap line to Edgar Wright’s new documentary about Sparks is that they’re your favourite band’s favourite band.
