I saw the film back in 2013. and found it to be pretty good. I could have sworn that the Pino Donaggio score had been released, but I can't find any reference to it.

I'm a Donaggio fan, and can confirm that, unfortunately, it has not been released.
I watched the movie on Youtube a couple of years ago -it has probably been removed by now
If the film is from 1981, it is not the film I'm thinking of. The film I saw is from the very late 60s or early 70s.
Then it could be Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye (1973).........the cat in that is ginger if I remember rightly and he pops up quite a lot thru the film. It also stars Jane Birkin and an orangutan.

THAT'S THE ONE! Thank you.
Now, to further confuse matters, isn't there also a Hammer film from this period with a recurring cat?
1) SHADOW OF THE CAT 1961 b&w (music by Theodorakis) 2) THE TOMB OF LIGEIA 1964 Corman Poe & 3) Universal's EYE OF THE CAT 1969 (with Gayle Hunnicutt & music by Schifrin)

There's also a UK Hammer film, or a UK film meant to ape the Hammer style.
