Could've sworn it was made on CD then. confused

Soundtrack Collector has a listing and a catalog number for an MCA CD, and even 10 people who think they have it in their collection, but there is no evidence that it exists. And Universal, who was pretty scrupulous about their soundtrack advertising on their film posters at the time, said it was only on records and cassettes.

Not only was the album a re-recording, but the cues were re-arranged specifically for listening.

As long as you don't tell me that Artie Butler arranged the album, I'm in. smile

big grin

Never fear -- orchestrations by Pat Russ and Christopher Palmer!

To be fair to Intrada, it's also under their usual price setting.
$17.99, so they are offering it at a reduced rate.
That's 18 dollars for 24 minutes of EB music (and some extra songs, take them or leave them).
Aren't some of those Disney download albums (WandaVision?, Mandalorian?) working out at way over one dollar per minute at the moment?
Plus, you can hold, stroke and caress this one wink

Did I miss the post where someone announced what Intrada's very unexpected release after Legal Eagles is? I only found out by checking the Intrada Message Board, and I assumed it was one that would be trumpeted pretty loudly here.

I just put mine on for a spin. I hear crackling / ticking in the first few tracks - like you used to hear in the days of "CD rot"?. I tried it in two different drives. Same thing happens.

Does anyone else's copy have these sonic anomalies?

The main theme has a childlike buoyancy that is classic Bernstein. I also liked the more misterioso fake-noir music, which makes much more of an impression on the disc than in the film (this should have been a much better film than it was). Love theme seems to pay tribute to Rosenman's REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.

Is it me, or is there far more Ondes Martenot on the album than in the film tracks? I don't remember it being anywhere near this prominent.

I linked to Intrada's announcement on the 27th in this thread, and there was some discussion that followed:
https://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?forumID=1&pageID=2&threadID=143121&archive=0

I'm sure it'll get a new thread of its own when Intrada actually puts it up for sale. smile But you can start one before then if you like!

I just got this CD and the first track "Legal Eagles Love" has faint crackling noise in the background. I noticed it immediately and then put on headphones to confirm and it's there for sure. I am on the second track and it may even be there too in the background.

Was this mastered from an LP or something?

The sound quality is very disappointing.

James

Addition: Yep. On all the score tracks so far.

Just read this at Intrada to check the source of the recording:

"Intrada CD premiere presents identical contents and sequence as original MCA label album from 1986, mastered in crisp digital audio from Mitsubishi X-80 format two-track stereo album masters. Bernstein produced seven score selections covering major highlights of film soundtrack."

If this is crisp digital audio I'm amazed.

This is quite disconcerting. Unfortunately I am still "in limbo" location and not able to have headphone access when it comes to listening closely. Any other purchasers able to offer their experiences??

I checked the Intrada board about this and someone did bring it up.

http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8690&sid=5eba3cb42a17f36f70e29b2c9032cfa4

There never was a clear answer to what this was.

In short it seems that this a disappointing (crap) release

It sounds like what everybody's hearing might be a sonic quality inherent to the tapes, perhaps due to errors made during the original recording/mixing of this re-recorded performance. Some of the issues described reminds me of the recording of John Ottman's score "Incognito," which if memory serves suffered from an error made in the tape recording.

I don't recall issues with "Ingonito" but this is bad enough to make the disc unlistenable.

I'd post at Intrada about it but I'm having login issues there.

Here's John Ottman on "Incognito," from his website:

"When we began mixing the score at Blowtorch Flats (Basil Poledouris' studio) in Venice, we discovered a disastrous problem in the score. Static was popping up from track to track throughout. It was discovered to have been a Dolby card problem when the score was recorded. We began dodging and ducking static, until it was just not working anymore. We then sent mixed cues to a digital specialist to remove the static. Unfortunately, frequency ranges were removed as well. It was heartbreaking. The mix dragged on as I was being sent dailies to Apt Pupil, which didn't exactly relax me. Finally, we found a new digital technique to remove the elusive pops and crackles without sacrificing fidelity. It was mastered a little more brightly than I wanted (which will always disturb me), but in the end the score was saved."

I too think "Incognito" sounds basically fine, but the "bright" mastering Ottman writes of has always been noticeable to me. I also recall being able to faintly hear the "static" on the CD, so they weren't able to get rid of it completely.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue as with "Legal Eagles," but it might be something similar: an error made during the recording that can't be completely corrected, even with new technology.

Until reading yours and other posts mentioning this, I thought I might have a faulty pressing, since I was hearing these pops and crackles as well.

These (albeit slight) "crackling" noises did not appear on the prerecorded cassette or the LP (both of which I've owned for years), so it obviously there was nothing wrong with the master originally. Tape deterioration is my best guess (the recording being 35 years old).

Intrada said the source elements were in excellent condition:

"The album features the complete program released by MCA Records back in 1986 from source elements stored in the UMG vaults in excellent condition."

All fine and good, but have you actually listened to the CD?

From Roger Feigelson :

http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8690

"It's not a vinyl rip, but the music was recorded on a relatively unstable (and now rightly defunct) media call Mitsubishi X-80, so those are inherent in the master. It's not something that be removed."

Personally, I wonder what machine was used to play back and transfer the tapes and how the 50.4 kHz original sample rate was converted to 44.1 kHz.

And there might have been a problem during the play back/transfer/conversion process.
