The standard def video is atrocious.

Looks fine to me.

Looks muddy, dark, out of focus. Basically like watching a movie thru a dirty window.

Have you considered glasses? Or if you wear them, getting a new prescription or cleaning them?

Are you really trying to make the argument that this show is brightly-lit and clear as a bell?

Are you a heavy smoker and the TV screen got covered in soot? I'm not making an argument, it's simply my experience, the dvds look fine. Dvdbeaver has screengrabs comparing the Dvds with the Blu-ray, and the dvd look even brighter:

Jeez, did I say everything on my television looks bad??? Its not my eyes, I don't smoke... Generally speaking watching a standard def image on a 50'ish 1080p screen looks pretty bad. Ive purchased the digital copy of Kolchak off of iTunes, and it looks like shit. There's scenes where its completely black and I can't tell what I'm looking at. I've also watched it on MeTV, and while not as bad not so good either. What I stream or see on MeTV don't look anywhere near as clear or sharp as those DVDbeaver screen caps. Of course its going to look better at that small scale compared to a big screen TV.

Solium, I was replying to jenkwombat (which I have now specified), not you. I interpreted his comment as agreeing with your original criticism that the dvds were terrible. Yours and my disagreement was over when you rephrased your assessment that the blu-ray are an improvement, which is true to some degree.

I was replying to jenkwombat, not you, solium. I thought he was agreeing with your original criticism that the dvds were terrible. You already re-worded your assessment that the blu-ray was an improvement, which is true to some degree.

Gotcha, sorry! Any rate I clarified my opinion for everyone I guess.

TO LAST CHILD AND KING SOLIUM:

Yes, I was basically agreeing with King Solium. Even the Blu-Ray of this show is very dark. Compared to other shows of the period; "Columbo", "The Rockford Files" and "The Magician", look bright and clear, even on DVD. I didn't mean anything in my statement as an insult (I was just teasing), but I do think King Solium's original assessment is correct overall.

The Blu-Ray is definitely an improvement, but it's still dark or "dim" to watch (and I'm not referring to the tone of the show). Even the daylight scenes are less illuminated than the shows I mentioned above.

Don't get me wrong. None of this detracts too much from my viewing of the show. I still love it. Always have.

ADDED: By the way, apparently, behind-the-scenes (according to a few of the commentary tracks) studio "suits" were also complaining about how dark the show appeared, causing one of the creatives to defend this practice by saying (words to the effect of), "It's called 'The Night Stalker', not 'The Day-For-Night Stalker'".
