Elfman is scoring the Sam-Raimi-produced sci-fi thriller starring Adam Driver.

Intriguing. I keep hoping for a proper, heady outer space sci fi from Elfman (other than more quirky stuff like MARS ATTACKS and PLANET OF THE APES). In fact, I asked him this very question on the red carpet interview a couple of years ago, where he replied "Yes, I'm still waiting!". Maybe this 65 is it.

A serious science fiction score from him would be interesting … had it been like fifteen or twenty years ago. Now, it'll probably be a miss. I hope for a hit.

New trailer:

Variety's post also confirmed Elfman was signed to score: https://variety.com/2022/film/news/adam-driver-65-trailer-1235415966/

Certainly looks like fertile ground for him.

Based on interviews, I think Elfman scored a cut of this movie a year ago (before Doctor Strange 2). The movie has since had reshoots and I don't think he wrote any more music for it.

I expect this may end up with a co-composer credit for Chris Bacon.

A few years ago, I did a red carpet interview with Danny Elfman in Vienna, and I said to him -- given that he's done most genres -- that he should do a cerebral space film at some point. He answered "Yeah, I'm still waiting".

When I first read about this 65 assignment, I thought this was finally it. As it turns out, it isn't really that, but rather an ingenious twist on JURASSIC PARK. That being said, I love the premise and what I see in the trailer. In fact, this is pretty close to what I would have loved a JURASSIC PARK 4 to be. Not the rather inane thing that the JURASSIC WORLD movies turned out to be (albeit entertaining), but rather a down-to-earth survival story about one man lost in the dinosaur jungle. Perhaps the back story of that young kid from JP3 that survived on his own for weeks in the jungle, Newt from ALIENS-style. Or some variation thereof.

In any case, count me pretty excited for the movie. As for the score, Elfman is hit and miss for me these days, so I refrain from having any expectations.

Re-shoots are never a good sign. Seems like a Predator sequel rejected plot. I’m all for a good interesting Sci-fi. We’ll just have to see.

I happen to disagree. Films are very often better when filmmakers have the luxury of looking at what they have and then improving on it. That's why everybody from Marvel to Woody Allen budgets reshoots from the very beginning. Good scripts are good scripts, but films as shot take on a life of their own, and it's important to look at them critically as what they are, not what you thought they'd be.

Not all reshoots improve films, of course. But often, they do!

I'm with Schiffy on reshoots. They're not always a sign of disaster.

The trailer starts out strong, mysterious but then it seems to fall into a dinosaur chase. I hope there’s more.

Someone maybe have to change the title of the post, because Elfman is not the composer anymore, Chris Bacon take the whole credit (along with his team) and the score should be release next week by Sony Classical.

Damn, that's sad frown

But I will not jump to conclusions before the release.

Yeah, it's a bummer, but it doesn't seem like the movie is going to live up to the early promise.

Would've liked to hear Elfman dino music though.

So the movie was only set to be good if Danny Elfman scored it? Chris Bacon is a very good composer. I'm still just as interested in this little B-movie oddity and I hope it's a success.

No, Bacon is great. I'm really happy for him landing a gig like this. I'm a fan of Driver, Raimi and really enjoyed Haunt, the directors' previous film. But two different versions of the movie were having test screenings a week ago, which was two weeks before release.

Hmmm....well, as I alluded to earlier, I first thought this was a big, intellectual, serious space sci fi when I first heard about it and that Elfman FINALLY got do one in this genre, but now that it turns out to be more of a JURASSIC PARK-type thing, I'm not that bummed that Elfman leaves the project. I'm sure that Bacon will deliver the goods, and that the film is an entertaining romp for what it is.

This movie will be great for me in any way, because I love dinosaurs in any form of art smile

With a premise like this, my ticket it presold. The movie will almost certainly contain awesomeness, whether or not it is fully awesome, but the score's awesomeness will be directly proportional to its willingness to be melodic. I could very easily see this becoming a sound-design nightmare, and I can write the PR quotes myself: "I wanted the soundtrack to echo the roar of the dinosaurs," "I wanted something raw and threatening, just like the dinosaurs," "I wanted to score the visceral anxiety and fear of running for your life."
