I'm excited about this and it's definitely my favorite DeVol score too--I remember it was agonizing throwing out cues when we were trying to squeeze it on a CD with Patton. At one point Nick Redman was determined that we should not use the cue that plays as they start the engine of the rebuilt plane near the climax of the movie and I remember saying to Nick, "I will pay you five dollars if we can keep this cue." At this point of course I was little more than a flunkie without the awesome power and influence I wield today so it was a real act of bravery on my part. There's a wonderful, melancholy theme that was barely hinted at on the FSM release but which gets much more play in tragic moments in the movie (and I'm sure someone addressed this but the belly dancer is a fevered hallucination or memory of one of the characters who's wounded and dying). Can't wait to get this!
You know, I've always viewed this as one of Horners more lightweight scores but I watched the film for first time in over 20 years and thoroughly enjoyed what I heard in the film. Pleasant and fun and I wouldn't mind grabbing a complete version of this score as well.

I don't think Nick had much emotional attachment to this score. I remember once having an email exchange with him about 5 years after it came out in which I asked him whether there was a possibility at some point of a complete score release and he couldn't recall there being more. I kept my amusement to myself but secretly worried that perhaps nothing else was in usable shape. I'm so thrilled to have been wrong!
I am so looking forward to this! I bought the FSM edition and love it but with one exception. In the main title on the FSM edition around 0.41 when the Arabic styled theme plays under the staccato chords the Arabic theme seems muted and lacks the power of the film mix. The music then oddly gets louder at around 1.18. This was always one of my holy grail themes and I was a bit disappointed at the time. Could Jeff or Lukas possibly shed any light on this? or was it the case that this was how the masters were mixed as there were sound effects involved in the film version. I only ask in the hope it was an anomaly that might be fixed in the new release.
The freeze-frames in the opening credits of Flight of the Phoenix (see above) were a blatant copy of the very popular (and much-lampooned by comedians) style of the Dr. Kildare TV titles of the time:
I laughed aloud when seeing the Flight of the Phoenix titles for the first time, and half-expected one of the freeze-frames to show Richard Chamberlain in the plane. To call this "one of the most riveting and powerful opening credit sequences that ever set a movie in motion" would be too funny! Surely they must be talking of some other film? Surely?
I'm curious if we get to hear the main title with the silence between those credit flourishes. I always thought it was pretty cool.
I'm looking forward to the PHOENIX and pay money.I consider myself not only a soundtrack geek but mainly a customer.So please spare me those comments about not being " grateful " that this or that is being released.I guess I spent tens of thousands of dollars/euros on Intradas ...Lalas..Quartets whatever.....I really don't care if retailers /sellers/ producers of any soundtracks are either offended or annoyed when people are wishing/ asking for more releases to come.If they are indeed annoyed by the unsatisfied hunger of customers...I guess they should stop producing...Sorry for the harsh words...but I find the attitude and sometimes rude tones of some producers rather offensive.
The fun thing of this forum for me was always talking about scores..and also have the opportunity to "ask/ wish" for things to come.Isn´t it a good thing that geeks like us are never satisfied? ..Or do I misunderstand the concept of selling and making money.
