The number of LPs making their debuts on CD, which has been steadily decreasing over the years, hit an all-time low in 2020, with only 6 releases of domestic U.S. LPs on CD. This is the smallest number of LPs converted to CDs since I began keeping a record in 2008. Various reasons account for this: (1) It gets ever more difficult each year to find worthy candidates for conversion, (2) Interest in recordings from that bygone era lessens each year, as those who grew up with LPs stop collecting or pass away, and (3) Some labels (e.g., Sony, Warner Music Group) are becoming more hostile to supporting catalog releases by outside labels. Here is the history:
Most of this year’s conversions have been of LPs from minor labels. Here are the domestic LPs that were first (legitimately) issued on CD in 2020, followed by a selection of foreign LP conversions:
