I love this Roy Budd score! I had the Legend CD ages ago...can't find it. The Cinephile edition is different. There's also this suite on Youtube:

Did anybody ever go through all the releases and identify the tracks???

Thanks!

Lukas

Paul Fishman did an 'extended' digital (no CD) version of this fairly recently which I haven't heard but I imagine it's the Cinephile disc padded out with 'remixes'. I've never heard the Italian disc, and I think I'm happy with the Cinephile.

I seem to remember that - several years ago - someone here (possibly Stephen Lister?) did a quick summary of the differences between the Cinephile and the Legend...

I did, Simon - here's what I originally said:

THE STONE KILLER - Legend CD

01 Main Title 3:21
02 Under Surveillance 2:05 * unique to Legend CD
03 The Plot 3:13 * unique to Legend CD
04 On The Trail 3:01 * unique to Legend CD
05 The Graveyard 2:36
06 In The Shadows 3:37
07 Too Late 2:11
08 The Old Precinct 1:25
09 Down Downtown 1:44
10 On The Move 1:57
11 Down Uptown 3:50
12 From Vietnam To New York 2:04
13 The Chase 2:44
14 Assassination 3:01
15 Final Capture 2:35

TOTAL TIME: 39.31

THE STONE KILLER - Cinephile CD

01 Main Title 3:22
02 From Vietnam To New York 2:04
03 On The Move 2:56 * different intro - beautiful shimmering effects. The Legend version opens with a startling and dramatic brass sting, which is unique to that disc.
04 M5 (sk2) - untitled 1:24 * unique to Cinephile release
05 Too Late 2:46 * different, longer intro, with added electronic effect
06 In The Shadows 3:37
07 The Graveyard 2:39 * extra electronic "whooshing" at start
08 The Old Precinct 2:45 * a longer version, but with no extra music - the intro and opening melody are simply repeated, padding out this track by over a minute.
09 Black Is Beautiful 4:45 * source song unique to this release
10 Assassination - Part Two 1:40 * has a repeated section added awkwardly in the middle
11 Down Downtown 1:43
12 Down Uptown 3:51
13 Assassination - Part One 1:47
14 The Chase 3:06 * a TERRIBLE sounding repeated section added towards the end - it makes the track sound like the disc is skipping around. Legend version is far superior.
15 Final Capture 2:36

TOTAL TIME: 41.10

To sum up:

The Cinephile CD is missing three Legend tracks:
2. Under Surveillance
3. The Plot
4. On The Trail
--over 8 minutes of great music.

The Legend CD is missing two Cinephile tracks:
4. M5 (sk2)
9. Black Is Beautiful (source song)
--about 6 minutes of music

The Cinephile disc sounds wonderful, and is often mixed slightly differently - particularly with electronics, which have a bit more presence and impact. It has two extra tracks, one score, one source. However, the bad news is it is missing THREE score tracks that appear on the Legend version. Also, for some reason, one of the very best tracks (Assassination) is split into two parts on the Cinephile CD; this track has a great suspense build-up, a tense pause, and then it bursts into action ... but Cinephile cut the track during the pause, thereby ruining the intended effect.

Then, who will re-release with all the tracks intact? Last Budd was from Cometa.

Thanks Stephen - a most useful summary, and one well worth repeating after all this time!

Hope you're keeping well in these fairly miserable times wink

I doubt it somehow...

Perhaps someone can tell us if the new download version is actually worth it? To me it just looks like the Cinephile with 'remixes' which I question are really worth the purchase. Good for those who haven't got previous CD's though, I'm sure.

When comparing the very detailed summary by Stephen Lister to the tracklist of the recent download album from JHP, it seems that it adds up the Legend album program (the first 15 tracks, same running times) and the Cinephile exclusive and revised tracks (called here "CD mix" or "Alternate Mix") :

JHP digital album :

CD 1 (Legend album)
1 The Stone Killer Main Titles 03:24
2 Under Surveillance 02:07
3 The Plot 03:17
4 On The Trail 03:00
5 The Graveyard 02:40
6 In The Shadows 03:38
7 Too Late 02:13
8 The Old Precinct 01:32
9 Down Town 01:46
10 On the Move 02:02
11 Down Uptown 03:53
12 From Vietnam 02:06
13 The Chase 02:47
14 The Assasination 03:06
15 Final Capture 02:36

CD 2 (Cinephile tracks)
1 The Stone Killer Main Title Alternative Mix 03:30
2 M5 SK6 The Old Precinct CD Mix 02:47
3 M5 SK7 On The Move CD Mix 03:00
4 M1 SK10 The Chase CD Mix 03:09
5 Black Is Beautiful 04:47
6 M4 SK10 CD Mix 01:44
7 M7 SK10 The Assasination CD Mix 01:42
8 M5 SK2 01:48
9 The Graveyard Alternative Mix 02:40
10 The Stone Killer Main Theme Film Mix - Mono 03:26

I have the Silva Screen rerelease which is identical to the Cinephile one (paired together with DIAMONDS). Great stuff. I coincidentally just received Caldera's release of MAN AT THE TOP (also from 1973) and enjoy it too. Budd was a fantastic composer who unfortunately died much too young.

I just discovered this awesome Budd score, "Foxbat," on a Cinephile CD with The Internecine Project and Something to Hide.

The 1977 cinematic masterpiece is on Youtube...if anybody knows where the amazing track 5 appears in the movie, "FB M15," I'd love to watch it! Funky great!
