It's not out-right said Johnny was speeding again, but it's strongly implied. Still not pulled over. I think all cops across America go on lunch when Johnny gets behind the wheel.

Johnny is asked how old he is, and he says -- cut off while saying it -- his next birth day he'll turn thirty-something. If you read my trivia for the five-parter

Out-of-context quote...
Dollar: "Then give it to me, quick!"

And with that, Johnny Dollar lost what many fans consider to be THEE voice of the character. The next voice actors got lucky, as the format and MuTel Music library was kept, as well as the theme music (how far in, I can't say, but I am will continue the journey into the show). However, vey few Bailey-era cues are used, opting instead for entirely new re-occurring pieces, turning the show more into a lighter feel and at times a cliched private eye melodrama. I will not be covering the music for this run.

MuTel Music:

During my journey through the library music and my moderate research on it, I discovered some new information not found anywhere else online (that I could find). Some of it is not new, but I am consolidating it all here.

So, it turns out this radio program was not the only one to use the cues heard during the Bob Bailey. While there is no full list of TV series uses, I have come up with the following shows:

"Whirley Birds"
Reportedly uses cues. I went threw near all the of the episodes available for the first season and did not find any there. I'll leave it to others to check other seasons.

"Fury"
Also reportedly has cues heard in it.

"Dick Tracey"
Yes -- "Dick Tracy" used the cues from the MuTel Music library which are heard in Bob Bailey's run!
"Sharkey's Secret Treasure" (2.15), for example, opens with "trembling strings open/5 violin" (no other familiar pieces are used in the episode).
And "Brain: Part 2" uses "brass and pacing violins open" -- far more to the cue than the "Johnny Dollar" ever used.

"The Adventures of Superman"
This is an important entry because it was more than just simple uses.

The show used multiple familiar cues from the series during its first season.

One of the most frustrating things when doing salvage jobs for cues on "Johnny Dollar" was that some cues fell out of use and I was therefor unable to full salvage them, but thankfully it turns out that was not an issue, because you can buy some of these cues!

Yeah, technically you'll be paying big bucks on the after market, but Volume 1 from Varese Sarabande of library music used in "The Adventures of Superman", is all MuTel Music cues and a number of them are heard in "Johnny Dollar". Such examples include (mostly) but are not limited to:

  • "Shadows on the Wall" (Lan Adomian)
This was the cue I had nick named "4 tremble/clarinet".
    Full cue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmBaywZChik

  • "Spreading Mysterioso" (Lan Adomian)
This is the cue I nick named "12 trumpet/xylophone"
This full cue, as heard below, actually contains parts that I assumed where different cues and thus got "re-occurring" and "semi re-occurring" titles in this thread.

    Full cue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38am1UEJKXg

  • "The Slap" (Herschel Burke Gilbert)
This is the cue I nick named "brass and pacing violins open"
    Full cue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhlo87lZ7Zs

  • "Violin Scream" (Herschel Burke Gilbert)
This is the cue I nick named "striking two-note violin open"
    Full cue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc7Gya-jE28

  • "Beating Heart" (Lan Adomian)
This is the cue I nick named "Rifleman"

The cue was always featured in edited down versions on "Johnny Dollar". Because of that, even though you can legally own this cue in good sound, I have decided to present one of the edits for a later release, with an ending from an unknown cue.

    Full cue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP6WI8f5iv4

For the second and third season of the show, they switched to the DeWolfe library.

So, there you have it -- you can legally own music from "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" if you are so inclined. I hope for the day when more becomes available.

There are tapes and paper work for cues in the Gilbert collection at UCLA:

    THE JOHNNY DOLLAR THEME MATTER:

Or: How I Learned How to Disappoint Yavar Quickly By Saying: Not By Goldsmith.

So ... who did compose that theme fans know so well from the show, the second or third (or even fourth, depending on how you want to look at it), that sprung up at the start of the Bob Bailey's run?

Well, let me go ahead and say it again: Despite guesses online, including here at the FSM forum, the theme is not by Jerry Goldsmith. None of the themes are.

Trivia note: This radio program isn't even the first production to use this piece of music! Yes, it popped up as the second theme to the black and white "Dick Tracy" 1950 television series, during season two (starting with episode eight, ). Always a second theme and never a first theme. The opening and closing credits. Don't believe it? Ye of little faith:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaXETGJUxw4 (a few tiny seconds into the opening)

I don't recall finding any scoring in season one. but for season two they went with the MuTel Music library.

Be sure to go to 24:05 to hear the end credits because you'll get a special treat: a tiny bit more of the cue never heard on the radio show.

And for good measure, here is an episode with the first theme (for those curious): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTT_cjAWm_c

Over time people have speculated on who might have done the theme based on scoring they thought sounded like the infamous JD theme. I present two that have come up over time:

    CULPRIT #1:
    David Rose
Sound-alike: his theme to a 1957 TV series called "Sea Hunt".
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb_GQ7mQ7QM

The theme opens this video. Reportedly the show is just tracked with library music and there is probably no original scoring (well, the season four episode "The Aquanettes" has some original scoring, as the Warren Barker collection shows sketches for this episode).

So, did Rose do the popular "Johnny Dollar" radio theme? Nope.

    CULPRIT #2:
    Frank Skinner
    https://ok.ru/video/3683767618075

Based off a cue from the film score to the 1960 movie "Midnight Lace".
(which features a wonderful and sadly unreleased score, so go check that out!)

So, did Skinner do the popular "Johnny Dollar" radio theme? Nope. Go fish.

Now, once again delaying the reveal, there is a special note to make: It's not coincidental this theme popping up -- they're all lifting from a modern orchestral work -- including the "Johnny Dollar" theme!

So, what is that piece of music and who composed it that all these people are "borrowing" from? Lucky you, me being here to waste all my time researching and typing this all out for you.

The piece of music that is to them what Stranvinky was to Horner, is titled Symphony in F Sharp, and was composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEgrnh0yjaw (9:48 in)

So, now we arrive at the reveal. But, to pull a Columbo, there is ... one more thing...

As best I can tell, the theme is not an original piece composed for the radio program but rather a library cue from the now defunct music library, MuTel (or MUTEL -- Music for Television; which acquired the Capitol Hi-Q library, so it could even be from that library). I don't know if it was an original piece recorded for the library or if they simply got the rights to it for their library, as sources indicate they would do that.

The theme is heard in, best I can tell, a series of cue variations under the title of Theme No. 1. The version used in the opening is, best I can tell, from a cue titled Theme No. 1 - Long Version (dramatic). The end credits appears to be an edit job of parts of other cues using the theme, which eventually loops back just about the time it ends. If all the episodes of "Dick Tracy" that used the theme were up, I'd skim them to see if it was tracked into episodes, to see if I could get dialogue-free sections, but alas...

The music was composed under a fake name (Oliver Lee) by: Joseph Mullendore

Assuming that maybe they took music from some film or television project the composer scored, I went to his IMDb page, but his first scoring credit occurs in 1955 -- the same year the theme was used on the radio show. And I checked that film and didn't find it.

And yes, not only has there not been a release of any original scoring or tracked music from the radio program, but the popular theme has not shown up on any compilations that I could find.
