Hey folks,

One of the hardest John Barry scored films to see is THE DOVE.

It rarely gets shown on TV and although there was a pan-and-scan laser disc about 20 years ago, it has been neglected on home video ever since.

Well, Network, a UK based DVD and Blu-Ray label that is especially fond of John Barry, is bringing it back out.

Tip of the hat to Peter Greenhill for tipping me off on this.

Cheers

Nice. Network has spoiled us in the past with their special score features. Doesn't appear they've been able to do that on this release but it's still worth having.

Excellent news ... at long, long last. I did have the VHS in the early 1990s but I don't think it was good picture or sound. I've watched a few minutes on YouTube but kept hoping that it'll appear on BluRay one-day.

I didn't see the film on release ... I had no interest in watching a film of a youngster sailing around the world .. but a couple of years later I got the vinyl LP (US Release) soundtrack and then had to see the film. The music is that good!

In the mid-70s films would get recycled and this 1974 release came around as second feature to The Likely Lads (1976) which I was happy to see. I came away so entranced with The Dove that for many years it was one of my five favourite films. I don't expect it to register that well with me again ... but, who knows? smile

But as for the cover image. Is the young lady in a bikini meant to be Deborah Raffin? No way!

It's a nice little movie - perhaps even a bit ahead of its time. Nothing special, but there are worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The score, of course, is outstanding!

Good that this one is finally getting a DVD/Blu-ray release. It's been a long time coming.

I love, love, love this score. It sits in my top of top John Barry scores. Just wonderful! Did I mention I really like this score?

I will be checking out the Blu-ray for sure.

Yes, but how do you feel about the score, Chris?

(Just kidding!)

It's on my pre-order list along with Kidnapped. I remember seeing this at my local cinema.

There are many adjectives often used to describe Barry's music: melancholy, slow, heartbreaking, pensive, etc, but one you seldom here is exuberant. Barry really delivers an optimistic and, gulp, happy score.

I love Barry. I have many many of his albums. But if your having a down day or feeling depressed there’s a lot of his music that you’re not going to want to play. It’s not gonna be uplifting. His actions scores and in particular his Bond scores in his early music are exceptions to that. But if it’s his later period, you do not want to play on a down day.

It's a shame the audio is mono. Love the stereo separation of the guitars in many of the cues in this score. Haven't seen the film though so will likely pick it up as I love the score and always enjoy a sailing flick.

I prefer the other DOVE!
